Medina studied at Nicaragua's National School of the Arts, under the tutleage of Rodrigo Penalba. As early member of the Praxis Group (that formed in the early 1970's)-- Efren Medina has been instrumental to the formation of a Nicaraguan Modern Art School. The series 'Faces of Latin America' is one of several themes unique to this artist. 'Rostros Latino Americanos' or 'Faces' depict (in a modernist/abstract style)the realities found in the third world. The series formed out of the social conditions prevelant to Nicaragua, in particular to a civil war-- which in 1979 ousted a 41 year Dictatorial Dynasty. Other noted Nicaraguan painters include: Armando Morales, Alejandro Arostegui, June Beer, Manuel Garcia, Arnoldo Guillen, Genaro Lugo, Carlos Montenegro, David Ocon, Roger Perez de la Rocha, Leoncio Saenz, Orlando Sobalvarro, Luis Urbina and Leonel Vanegas |
