Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue, born in 1930 in Port-au-Prince, was the son of a French-born psychiatrist and a Haitian mother, Encouraged by Hector Hyppolite, he joined the Centre d'Art in 1947 at the age of 17, and swiftly achieved international prominence. He eventually moved to Spain where he lived and painted for many years before returning to Haiti, where he dided June 16, 1996. His work is included in the permanent collections of the musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Davenport Gallery in Iowaa, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa.
