Sakaguchi Sounsai(1899-1967) worked Bamboo Basket. Born in Meiji 32 (1899) Osaka. It studies under the first Tanabe Chikuunsai at the time of 15 years old. It becomes independent at the time of 24 years old. High evaluation is obtained with the prominent technique and an original design. The Showa 42 (1967) die, 68 years old. The kind of the bamboo of this basket is "Susu-dake"(smoked bamboo). Japanese people like peculiar taste and color of Susu-dake from ancient times. Susu-dake comes out, when disassembling and repairing an old private house. In the house of the thatched roof, the bamboo had surrounded on a sunken hearth and kitchen stove from ancient times. While this will pass with 100 years and 200 years, it discolors brown because of the smoke, and becomes a bamboo with beauty. This is the Susu-dake. Now, in Japan, since the house of the thatch roof was decreased, the quantity which can be taken decreases and it is very expensive. The condition of this basket is in excellent. It comes with water container and Tomobako(kiri-box). Signed "Sounsai zo(work) kore" on the base. Measurements about : Mouth Diameter 21.8cm(8.58"), Tall 46.7cm(18.38"). |
