A lovely Art Nouveau silver stickpin, the asymmetrically-shaped head featuring a medallist portrait of a maiden plucking the petals from a daisy. In Victorian flower symbolism, the daisy represented innocence, so the image of a maiden plucking away the petals carried a certain meaning beyond “He loves me, he loves me not”. The edges of the head are finished with pierced whiplash curves in the Art Nouveau taste. The medal is signed by Lucien Jean Henri Cariat, a noted French medallist of the era. The pin is fully hallmarked. Origin: France, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 3” overall length; head, 11/16” x 11/16”. Weight: 3.9 grams. |
