Wonderful large American coin silver napkin ring decorated with a Classical medallion and bright-cut engraving. The medallion depicts a young male Greek warrior wearing a helmet. The medallion is flanked with strapwork engraving. The upper and lower edges of the napkin ring are worked with foliate bright-cut engraving. The back is engraved “J. W. Johnson M.D.” within an engraved reserve. The interior is engraved “A Friend”. This particular medallion pattern has not yet been attributed to a particular silversmith. The pieces that have appeared with the matching medallion almost always incorporate extensive bright-cut engraving, as well. Origin: America, ca. 1865. Condition: the bottom edge of the back side has a bit of waviness; nice detail. Size: 1-25/32” high; 2-1/8” x 1-3/4”. Weight: 47.5 grams. |
