A very fine Imperial Russian enameled silver tea strainer or sugar sifter dating from the reign of Czar Nicholas II. The bowl is worked in an ornate pattern of six shades of enamel against a stippled background. The enamel work includes red, lavender and green translucent enamels which were very difficult to fire properly. Both sides of the flattened handle are worked in a matching pattern. This example has more ornate enameling than most tea strainers which are often decorated only along the edge and at the end of the handle. The stem is fully hallmarked with the St. Petersburg kokoshnik, with the assaymaster’s mark for Yakov Lyapimov and with the workmaster’s mark (possibly for Otto Makselius). Origin: Russia, 1899-1903. Condition: excellent, one cell on the back of the handle has 3/16” missing enamel. Size: 6-1/4” long. Weight: 50.0 grams. |
