Elegant early Victorian lacquered papier-mache round tray with Chinoiserie decoration depicting a court scene. The design, worked in metallic gold, silver and copper, shows three ladies in their garden overlooking the sea. One is contemplating a stringed instrument, one is tending to her robes, and the third appears to be having a cocktail! Lacquered papier-mache with such designs were popular in both England and France during the first half of the 19th century. Origin: probably England, ca. 1835. Condition: excellent, light rubbing to the finish along the bottom edge. Size: 12" diameter. |
