Louis XVIII French Sterling Silver Tastevin Wine Taster

A very fine early classic-style silver tastevin shaped in the traditional manner, with a convex bottom and shallow sides dotted with bulls-eyes and curved gadrooning. The sides are also decorated with clusters of grapes--a most uncommon decorative element. The workmanship is very good and the surfaces clearly show the effects of hand-hammering. The shape, combined with the sheen of the silver, allows the color of the wine to be fully appreciated in dark environments like a cellar or a candlelit room. The curved sides help concentrate the aroma, so only a very small amount of wine has to be poured from the bottle to judge quality.

The looped handle allows the tastevin to be worn suspended from a chain. This particular tastevin has a finely-worked handle in the form of a snake. Snake handles are most frequently seen on tastevins from the Burgundy region, but this example bears hallmarks from the city of Troyes in the Champagne region just north of the Burgundy region. The snake is most unusual in that its head is in the form of a dolphin's head. The dolphin has long been associated with the French monarchy (the crown prince's title was "Dauphin"), and this piece was most likely intended as an understated nod to royalist sympathies in the period when the Bourbon dynasty was restored to the throne following the Napoleonic Wars.

Origin: France, ca. 1820. Condition: excellent, no dings or monograms. Size: 3-5/32" diameter (excluding handle); 1-1/16" high. Weight: 68.0 grams.
