A fine pair of French Art Nouveau 18K yellow gold cufflinks designed by Edmond-Henri Becker. The cufflinks feature medallist portraits of the god Wotan (Odin) wearing his winged helmet, a frequent attribute for the highest ranking of the Germanic gods. The top-line French Art Nouveau jewelers such as Boucheron, Vever, Verger, and Aucoc commissioned sculptors such as Becker to create designs that could be incorporated into medallion-style jewels. Often the designs featured images of women, but the more interesting pieces drew inspiration from history or mythology. Becker was among the finest of the “medallists”, and as with all his work, the detailing is superb. The edge of the design is marked “Becker”. The backs are fully marked the the “tete d’aigle” hallmark for 18K gold and also with an illegible maker’s mark, most likely that of either Boucheron or Verger, the two jewelers who most frequently used Becker’s designs. Origin: France, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, sharp detail, each of the baton backs has a minor ding. Size: faces, 11/16” diameter. Weight: 5.2 gr. |
