This is an authentic antique Japanese 2 section Shonai Kasane Tansu used for kimono and textile storage. It measures 49.25" tall, 35.63" wide and 166.88" deep. Made entirely of Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) with unique and beautiful handmade iron fittings, this versatile chest of drawers could be used separately, side by side, or stacked together to complement any home decor.
It was made in the Shonai plains of Yamagata prefecture which was well known for their decorative and creative metal craftmanship. The unusual feature of this tansu is the different metal plates with symbols representing auspicious good luck themes. The three main drawers feature the Pine, Bamboo and Plum Blossom trees (Sho Chiku Bai) together making up the three felicitious friends of winter. Pine represents longevity, Bamboo represents strength.
Also incorporated into the metalwork are Cranes, Turtles, Sparrows and a Peligrin.
