Frantesek Kupka, 1871-1957, Opocno. Bohemia, Czech, and died in France. This stunning early mordernist painting is an early and an extremely fine example of Kupka's painting. It is approximately 17"H by 13"w in a 4" frame. It is signed clearly lower right and the entire painting and signature under black light looks good with no in painting. Kupka attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Prague at 17 years old and the Beaux Arts in Vienna. He moved to Paris in 1895 and also won the Prix de Rome. He lived in Putreau and was also a Professor for Academie Beaux Arts de Prague for Czech art students in Paris. He was in many exhibitions and after 1910 he remained faithful to the Modernist style he is known for. This painting is from his earliest modernist period. He is held in great regard with artists such as Delauney and Picabia. Kupka's works are represented in many museums: Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles, Guggenheim, Paris Museum of Modern Art, etc and his paintings sell for up to 1 Million. He has a very long listing in Benezit and has been the subject of many articles and books. A Czech painter and graphic artist, he was a pioneer and co-founder of the early phases of the abstract art movement. In 1887 he began training as an artist at the Prague academy under Frantisek Sequens, who had been strongly influenced by the Nazarener School. In 1891 the artist transferred to the academy in Vienna, where he worked under Professor Eisenmenger until 1893. In 1894 Kupka traveled to London and Scandinavia, settling in Paris, France in 1895. He worked as an illustrator of books and posters and created satirical drawings for newspapers and magazines. In 1905 Kupka moved to Puteaux in the suburbs, where he got acquainted with Jacques Villon, who introduced him to a circle of painters in 1910/11, including Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Francis Picabia and others. Through their discussions of Cubism, Futurism and the relationship between painting and music, Kupka's work became increasingly abstract, reflecting his theories of motion, color, and orphism. In 1909, he had exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne, with the submitted work marking a break in his representational style. In 1912, Kupka exhibited his abstract pictures, which are associated with Orphism because of their proximity to music. In 1918 Frantisek Kupka accepted a post as guest professor in Prague and in 1931 he co-founded the group 'Abstraction-Création' with Hans Arp, Jean Hélion, Auguste Herbin, Georges Valmier and Georges Vantongerloo, becoming a member of the group's board. In 1936, his work was included in the exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and in an important show with another Czech painter, Alphonse Mucha, at the Jeu de Paume in Paris. Kupka spent the Second World War in Beaugency, returning to Puteaux immediately after the liberation. In 1946 at the occasion of his 75th birthday the artist's first major retrospective was shown in Prague. In 1955 Kupka participated in documenta I in Kassel, Germany. He died in Puteaux on July 21, 1957 and a year later a large-scale retrospective exhibition took place at the 'Musée d'Art Moderne' in Paris, which dedicated an entire room to Frantisek Kupka.

Domenico Ghirlandaio, Italian, 1449-1494, Florence. Oil on panel in sepia tones. He lived when the Italian Renaissance was gathering speed and producing an astonishing succession of painters of genius. "Now that I have begun to get into the spirit of this art, I wish they would give me the walls of Florence to paint the whole circuit with stories." This is said to be Ghirlandaio's reaction to painting.popes, princes and members of the newly flourishing class of merchants. Banks gave him plenty of walls in Rome and Florence to cover with scenes from scripture and from the lives of saints. Through most of the scenes he scattered recognizable portraits of people of the day. Ghirlandaio seems to have been a born portrait artist. His full name was Domenico di Tommaso Curradi de Daffo Bigardi. Like many Renaissance painters, he began as a goldsmith, learning his trade from his father. His name is a nickname, meaning "garland maker", coming from the gold and silver garlands made in his father's shop and fashionable among Florentine ladies. The boy learned drawing by designing jewelry, and became so facile that, sitting in the shop doorway, he could catch the likenesses of passers-by. He entered the studio of Baldovenetti and became one of the most distinguished mosaicists and painters of his time. His designs were more correct and graceful than had ever been known before. He established a flourishing workshop in Florence with his two younger brothers. He had little inclination for the avant-garde of the day or for the movements we associate with Botticelli (with whom he worked at the Sistine Chapel). It is probable that Michelangelo owed more to the sound craftsmanship of Ghirlandaio, to whom he was apprenticed, than he cared to acknowledge.

Peploe studied at the College of Art in Edinburgh and the Academie Julian under Bouguereau and a member of the Scottish Royal Academy. His work is in the Edinburg and Glasgow Museums, is listed in Benezit and his paintings sell for up to 1 Million USD.Samuel John Peploe (27 January 1871 – 11 October 1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist* painter, noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists*. The other colourists were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell and Leslie Hunter. Born in Edinburgh, he studied at the Royal Scottish Academy schools from 1893 to 1894, and then at the Academie Julian* and Academie Colarossi* in Paris, where he shared a room with painter Robert Brough. He visited Holland in 1895, returning with reproductions of work by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. From 1901, he undertook painting trips to Northern France and the Hebrides with his friend J. D. Fergusson, another of the Scottish Colourists. Inspired by the bright sunlight, he experimented with the bold use of colour, and the influence of the rustic realism of French painters, and of the modernist Glasgow Boys*, is evident in his landscapes.Peploe moved to Paris in 1910, a period which saw him concentrate increasingly on still life and landscape painting. His still life works show the influence of Manet, with combinations of fluid brushwork, thick impasto* and dark backgrounds with strong lighting. Returning to Scotland in 1912, he went on regular painting trips with friends to many parts of the country, and during the 1920s he spent several summers with Francis Cadell, another Scottish Colourist, painting in Iona. Peploe was strongly influenced by French painting throughout his life. Although his work never became overly abstract, it was notable for its use of strong colour, tight composition, and meticulous execution. He died in Edinburgh in 1935. His paintings sell for up to $1.5 Million at auction.

Stamp “ Sammlung G. W. Stein - Zurich” (verso, upper right, , purple/red ink) Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany in 1880. His father was a successful Munich landscape and genre artist who influenced him strongly. Marc studied at the Munich Academy. He left there for Paris, then went home full of the doings of the Fauves and Cubists. In 1911 he joined with Klee and Kandinsky to found a group called the Blue Rider (Blaue Reiter). Their members aspired to nothing less than painting the essence of things. They put feeling first, faithfulness to nature or to formal conventions last. They were the clear sweet dawn of German expressionism. a school that later languished from too much heaviness, bitterness and swagger. For Marc, as for his friend and mentor, Kandinsky, implementation of new art forms was indeed a religious crusade. He saw pure abstract art as truth and worked toward it with the same fervor he had once directed toward the study of theology. Marc loathed conflict of any kind. Man therefore revolted him, and animals he painted with strong, elaborately rhythmical compositions. He transformed their animality with flashing colors; a horse might be sky blue or fire red. Marc's career ended abruptly with his conscription in 1914. He died in 1916 in Verdun.

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his early cubust period in the 1920's is pencil on paper. It is 21.5cm w by 25cm h in a beautiful frame 45cm w by 47.5cm h. It is signed lower left F. L. 20. Fernand Léger was born in 1881, the same year both Picasso and Braque were born, in Normandy; his father was a substantial cattle grazer. Fernand was trained as an architectural draughtsman and later worked as a professional retoucher of photographs. He was an abstract painter before the War, in which he had a brilliant record. He had visited the United States twice. In France, he lived in a villa next to some railroad tracks in a Paris suburb, and a farm in Normandy where he raised pigs and made cider. It is often said that Léger was the artist of the machine age, but he was not entirely a man of his time. He knew poverty as a child, was gassed in World War I, had to flee before the invading Nazis in World War II. But there is little of death and destruction in his work. Other men have painted with more passion, few with more exuberance.Léger returned to France at the end of 1945 after spending the war years traveling and lecturing in the United States. There had been three previous visits to America in the 1930s, all entrepreneurial adventures of only modest success. He had resumed his practice of making public appearances to explain his art to a sometimes curious, sometimes bewildered public. In addition, he enjoyed many celebrity encounters, like a holiday with Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, an evening at the theatre with James Joyce and friendships with Ezra Pound and Henry Miller. His paintings sell for up to 37 Million and his paintings are in many museums.

Carl Moll, Austrian,1861-1945. This stunning landscape is a study in impressionist color and light and dark. It is an oil on canvas, signed lower right. It is 15 5/8" by 19 5/8" in a handsome newer gold frame with overall dimensions of 26 5/8" by 29 5/8". Moll is a master of light and dark and the use of impressionist brushstrokes to convey the impact of the intensity of color at dusk. He is listed in Benezit and sells for up to $304,000. He was a member of the Worpswede group. "Worpswede is a group of artists who settled after 1889 in the north German village of Worpswede, near Bremen, in order to paint the local landscape. They depicted the heaths, meadows, forests, streams, bridges, windmills, and peasants of the area in a romantic and sentimental style, somewhat reminiscent of the earlier 19th-century Barbizon school in France. Fritz Mackensen and Otto Modersohn." Carl Moll, born in Vienna in 1861, grew to be a painter of landscapes, interiors and still lifes, whose later work became a testimony to the Art Nouveau period. Beginning his art studies under Viennese landscape painter, Carl Haunold, Moll later became the student of Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. By far the most influential teacher of his career was Emil Jakob Schindler, with whom he painted and remained friends from 1881 until Schindler’s death in 1892. Although one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession in 1897, Moll left the movement in 1905 along with other followers of Gustav Klimt. While artistic director of the Miethke art gallery and dealership, Karl Moll organized numerous exhibitions, and, during this time, was credited for persuading the Austrian Gallery to purchase many important works by Cézanne, Van Gogh and Renoir. From 1912 on, Moll traveled Europe and worked for private collectors, saving many important works from obscurity by bringing them back to Vienna. As a post-secessionist artist, Moll concentrated on landscapes and light, as well as on capturing the atmosphere and ambiance of the scenes he depicted. In 1930, he published a book on his former teacher and friend, Emil Jakob Schindler, and continued organizing worthy exhibitions until his death in 1945.
