George Inness N.A.,attributed, New York, New Jersey, 1825-1894. This golden glowing American Impressionist painting, "Landscape in Monclair, NJ " by Inness is 18" by 24" in a French style frame. It is signed G. Inness lower right. It is in good condition with evidence of small craquelure which has been restored and has been relined. Inness is considered to be one of the important Impressionist Painters in the Hudson River School. His paintings sell for up to $2 million. Inness is listed in Boswell, Dawdy, Fieldings, Hughes, Mallett, Samuels, and Who was Who in American Art. As with any artist worthy of the title, George Inness is not easily summed up. Often associated with the Hudson River School, he was, in fact, aesthetically in opposition to the large, detailed canvases which characterized the work of such painters as Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), two major representative painters of that group. Others see him as a transplanted member of the French Barbizon School, more in tune with their less grandiose, more intimate landscapes of homely, domesticated scenes of rural France. Still others as the title of this exhibition* indicates see him as a visionary theorist, painting dreamy landscapes fraught with symbolic messages and meanings. And, like any artist, these and many other attempts at pigeonholing might well fit part of the man and his work.

De Witt Parshall, Santa Barbara, California, 1864-1956. This oil on board is 16" by 20" in a 4" frame. Overall dimensions are 24" by 28". It is signed on the front lower left and also signed and titled verso "Night". It is in excellent condition in an original American Period frame. Parshall studied in Dresden, Germany as well as Paris in 1887-88, He has an extensive exhibition record including the World's Columbian Expo in Chicago in 1893 and the Corcoran Biennial 5 times 1908-1937. His works are in many museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Detroit Institute of Art as well as in California and Seattle Museums. Parshall had a studio in NY in 1899. He is in Hughes, Artists of California, P&H Samuels, Art at the 19th C Paris Salons, Falk and Who was Who in American Art. His Auction records go up to $30,000 and his works sell for up to $45,000.

George Loftus Noyes, Boston, Maine, 1864-1954. This dramatic Arts Crafts Sunset Landscape is oil on board, signed lower left. It is 5" by 8" in an original arts crafts frame with overall dimensions of 10" by 13". Loftus Noyes is listed in Who was Who in American Art. He studied in Boston and Paris, He exhibited extensively in Boston, was in Corcoran Gallery Biennials. He was an accomplished impressionist landscape painter of the Boston School. In 1900, he began a summer school class in Mass. where one of his students was Andrew Wyeth. He traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa and Mexico. His last exhibition was in 1927, after which his work weakened. His work is in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Des Moines AM, Utah State Mus, and Dartmouth College.

Everett Shinn, 1876-1953, NY & PA. This small jewel is oil on canvas. It is 12" by 16" unframed and 17 3/4" by 20 1/2" framed. It has been relined and is in good condition. The signature on lower left is difficult to see. It comes from a fine collection in Miami and was purchased at Sothby's. A prominent New York-based artist in the early 20th century, Everett Shinn was a Social Realist painter who focused on lower-class urban themes. Although his ongoing reputation seems to be for Social-Realist subjects, his real interest was in the theatre and in creating images celebrating the spectacle. As art director for Metro Goldwyn Mayer and other studios and wrote, produced and created scene designs for plays held at his own 55 seat theatre in his New York City home. Shinn was born in Woodstown, New Jersey, and studied industrial design and basic engineering at Spring Gardens Institute in Philadelphia. From 1893 to 1897, while working for a gas fixtures company in Philadelphia, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as a student of Thomas Anshutz. He then worked as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press with George Luks, William Glackens, and John Sloan, and this group, part of the future "Eight," centered around Robert Henri's Philadelphia studio. In 1897, Shinn began working for the New York Herald and shortly after started a series of murals including panels for the Stuyvesant Theater and industrial depictions for the Trenton, New Jersey City Hall. Based in New York, he traveled extensively. In 1949, he was elected an academician of the National Academy. He was known for urban genre, illustrator, mural, scenic design. Ernest Albert, NA, New Canaan, Conneticut, 1857-1946. This gorgeous impressionist landscape is a soft, beautiful pastel scene showing trees and hills under a light blue sky. It has lovely thick paint which shows off the artist's masterful brushstrokes. It is 8 1/2" by 10 1/2" housed in a fine antique deep gesso decorated 2 1/2" frame giving it overall dimensions of 15 1/2" by 15 1/2". It is signed lower left and is in very good condition with 2 minor inpainted spots. A distinguished theatrical and scenic designer who also became a landscape painter and muralist, Ernest Albert worked in New York, St. Louis, and Chicago. At the pinnacle of his career in 1905, he began to withdraw gradually from his theater work. His family was settled in the striking new house he had built in New Rochelle, New York; his financial independence was established; and from then on, he devoted most of his considerable talent and energy to his landscapes. Albert's landscapes, painted mostly in Old Lyme, Connecticut and later on Monhegan Island, Maine (as well as a few on the West Coast), are simple in composition but subtle in effect. His impressionistic rendering of color and light imbue his quiet country scenes with all the magic of the moment. The gentle strength of these pictures and of his still lifes ensured their popularity and earned him a place as one of America's respected artists. Albert is a well listed artist in Davenport, Fieldings, Who was Who in American Art and Mallett. He was a cofounder of the American Society of Scenic Painters and Allied Artists of America and is represented in many fine collections.His paintings sell for up to $10,000.
