Roman and Greek Tanagra Figures: Circa 1st -3rd Century BC. This stunning example of Antique Roman is fired terra cotta 4.5" H. The next 3 photos are Greek. Condition: some normal weathering, good condition. From a private collection, guaranteed authenticity. Tanagra figures had not been much noted before the end of the 1860s, when ploughmen of Vratsi in Boeotia, Greece, began to uncover tombs ranging in date over many centuries. The main finds especially from the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE were secured in 1874. Inside and outside the tombs of the Hellenistic period — 3rd to 1st centuries BCE — were many small terracotta figures. Great quantities that were found in excavation sites at Tanagra identified the city as the source of these figures, which were also exported to distant markets. In addition, such figures were made in many other Mediterranean sites, including Alexandria, Tarentum in Magna Graecia, Centuripe in Sicily and Myrina in Mysia.

Robert rauschenberg,1925-2008 Texas. Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas of German and Cherokee Indian heritage. He was given the name of Milton and he changed it to Robert when he became a young man. In 1942 he enrolled in pharmaceutical studies at the University of Texas and soon after was drafted and later discharged from the U.S. Marines.A talent for sketching along with a friendship with a girl named Pat Pearman, led him to enroll in the Kansas City Art Institute where he studied music, sculpture and art history. It was all so new to him and so exciting that he took every class he could and literally ran from class to class. The following year he went on to Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian under the GI Bill. In Paris, he met Susan Weil, an artist who led him in 1948 to study with Josef Albers at North Carolina's Black Mountain College. He had never even heard of Albers who turned out to provide him with the discipline he needed but also was cruel and very intimidating. This period was followed by several years' attendance at the Art Students League in New York City with Morris Kantor and Vaclav Vytlacil. In 1950 Rauschenberg and Weil were married; they had one son and were divorced in 1952. In 1952 he met Jasper Johns and for the next five years the two artists were inseparable. They worked together on window displays for Bonwit Teller and Tiffany. He had met the composer John Cage and dance choreographer Merce Cunningham at Black Mountain College and he worked with them as a designer, manager and performer. He also made designs for Paul Taylor's dance company. In his work, Marín has developed historically universal aspects of art. Employing the human figure as the basis for his formal language, he deals with multiple themes, ranging from the fragile nature of human existence to the condition of man capable of transforming the world, using the potential of artwork to transmit meaning to its fullest. He conceptually and physically constructs each sculpture, based on an innovative combination of diverse materials: ranging from bronze with polyester resin to resin combined with amaranth seeds, dried meat, earth, flower petals, or tobacco. Beginning in 1983 Javier Martin began to participate in group exhibitions, and three years later, he had his first solo exhibition. Since that time, with more than 50 one-man and 200 group exhibitions, his work has been presented in cultural institutions and spaces of major importance in Mexico, Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Asia.
