Francis Augustus Silva, New York,1835-1886. Oil on panel, 5"H by 8"W in a 19th C frame (15" H by 18" W), signed and in good condition. Francis Silva was a second generation Hudson River School* painter, who did much painting along the Hudson River and along the coastline from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Ann, Massachusetts. His earliest known painting is titled Cape Ann. He became one of the leading marine painters of the luminist* style of the mid to late 19th century, especially known for his brilliant sunsets with atmospheric* effects. Of him, it was written: "For Silva, the subtle manipulation of light and atmosphere was an aesthetic device that transcended naturalism and became an almost abstract means of expressing sentiment." (Zellman, 265) Francis Silva was the son of a barber who had emigrated from Madeira to New York in 1830. He showed early art talent and with no apparent formal training, he apprenticed to a sign painter in New York and decorated fire wagons, vans, stagecoaches, etc. He also exhibited pen and ink drawings at the American Institute. In 1861, he enlisted in a New York militia and became a Captain of the Ninth New York Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He was stricken with malaria, and, wrongfully In 1865, he began his career as fine artist, and in 1868 made his debut at the National Academy of Design's* annual exhibition. That same year, he married Margaret Watts of Keyport, New Jersey. From that time, he received much acclaim for his serene, atmospheric marine paintings, and his later paintings tended towards Impressionism in style. In 1872, he was elected to the American Watercolor Society*. Francis Silva maintained his studio in New York but moved to New Jersey in 1880. He died in 1886. His paintings sell for up to $2.5 Million.

It is signed lower right (black lites well) and has an old auction sticker verso. It comes from an important private collection in Raleigh, VA. Blakelock was known for his impressionist, Tonalist paintings and often painted sunset scenes. His paintings sell for up to 3.5 Million.

It is signed twice on the lower left and is in a beautiful 19th C gold leaf frame. The painting is 6 3/8" by 8 1/5" in a beautiful 19th c frame (14 1/8" by 16 1/2")He is known for his landscapes and sells for up to $200,000.

Ivan Stoppe, Los Angeles, CA, May 1,1904 to 1971. It is oil on canvas, signed clearly lower right. The condition is good with no repairs or in painting and has been cleaned recently. The size is 34" by 44" in an older frame with framed dimensions of 39.25" by 49.5". It is from a private East coast Collection where it has been for about 15 years. He was a renowned portrait painter in Los Angeles, California, and New York City. He assisted David Siquieras (along with others including Sanford Pollock,John Kehoe and Dean Cornwell) in painting the Plaza Art Center mural "America Tropical" in Los Angeles, 1932. (LA Times, 8/24/32), and a scene from Frank Stocton's work "Rudder Grange" is hung in the Stocton Library, Old Nutley, N.J., Feb. 6, 1942. This portrait in its original frame and dating c. 1940, is from an important West Palm Beach estate, and may have been painted in the Hurst Mansion of Los Angeles.

Frank C Penfold, Buffalo, NY and Brittany, France, 1849-1927. This artist studied and painted primarily in France. His painting are very beautiful but rare. This painting is about 47"W by 72"H and is signed lower left. It was lined long ago and should be relined and given a period frame. Similar painting have sold for up to $70,000. He is listed in Who was Who in American Art as well as Benezit. He presented painting in the Paris Exposition until 1901, and obtained an honorable mention in 1889. His work is in the Brest Museum.
