Edwin Deakin, San Francisco, born in England, 1838-1923. This western landscape is 26 1/2" by 36 1/2" unframed, 42 1/2 by 52 1/2 framed in a beautiful 5" period frame, signed lower right with date 1879. Deakin lived in Chicago and San Francisco. He painted architectural paintings and portraits and then later started his landscapes and still lives of grapes that he is most well known for. This particular landscape shows the magnificent mountains of the american west in the background and highlights a stream bordered by pine trees in the foreground. It is a large paintings in a period wide frame that has details of leaves and pine cones. The painting was relined very competently early between 1879 and the turn of the century and there is some in painting in the foreground in the pine trees and water. This was very well done and not distracting from the beauty of the painting. No old tears or other repairs are noted. Deakin's auction records are especially high for this type of landscape as well as his still lives up to about $25,000.
