The Kannon, Goddess of Mercy & Compassion, is among the most sacred, popular, & most revered figures in Japan. Our ivory figure is an expertly & finely detailed carving dating Meiji (1868-1912). Our ivory Kannon is 10.75 inches high & 3 inches wide. The base is 3.5 inches & it is signed. This Kannon is riding an enormous python-like heavily scaled, 3-toed Dragon, which tells a story of courage, effort, & perseverance toward marital happiness. (It must work as I have owned her for all my 41 years of a Happy marriage!) The Kannon & Dragon are perched on an (ivory) rock which is meant to symbolize Fudarakusen- Holy Land. This wonderful & very detailed ivory figure is in original & excellent condition. I put cups of water in my cabinets with ivory to keep them hydrated. Also, once every few years, I put them in a water bath for hydration & to prevent age-cracking. Fine Japanese ivory is harder to obtain than Chinese ivory. This ivory is a very sought-after & hard-to-find subject. It was purchased in San Francisco, Ca., in 1970. It is irreplaceable, but we are getting older & none of our children cares for our collection of ivory. This is a fantastic Japanese ivory carving! It would probably date to 1900 if not earlier. This is estate ivory imported long before the BAN, however we cannot ship outside the USA. We are no longer able to sell Ivory to anyone in California. The state of Calif. passed a law in April 2012 banning the sale of ALL Ivory in Calif., even the antique Ivory. We cannot sell to New York either. In the near future, I think this law will be over the entire USA.. & the World. If you want to buy Ivory You should do so while it is still "legal". I am lowering price as it will soon be impossible to list Ivory for sale.
