We are very proud to offer a ladies 19C long anteri (robe) that is completely embroidered, with gold & silver colored threads, onto a dark silk lining. The gold threads are brass plated with 2% gold, which is usual. The original robes (Ottoman Empire 1200-1600) were made of solid gold threads but very few remain due to melting for the gold. This caftan represents an Islamic Turkish culture wedding costume. This rare & very sought after robe is exquisite & opulent. It most likely was made for a Royal or high status household. This prestigious robe was made for style & status. These gold colored threads have been made by winding flat strips of gold or silver colored wire around a central core thread either silk or linen. Under magnification you can see the metal wrapped around the thread. These hand made robes were expensive & hard to produce. They could take several years to make, if not longer. They are highly desired as they make an instant display of wealth & status & beauty, because this precious fabric is so expensive & luxurious. It is highly valued by all who see it. This beautiful middle- Eastern wedding gown has a round neck & buttons from top to bottom, which are covered in same fabric. Buttons are fastened through loops rather than button-holes. This robe is in excellent condition with only a few places with loose threads, see photo. I have owned it 40 years, & it has been carefully stored. This is a very heavy robe. It is a treasure in every way. It still can be worn proudly today. On Dec. 14, 2011 a robe just like this one sold at Christies auction for $10,000.xx . The former owner was Elizabeth Taylor!
