Exceptional clay kabuki actor samurai dolls from Fushimi in south Kyoto late Meiji Period C.1910. Butterfly motif on kimonos, classic kabuki faces and in excellent condition. Completely Wabi Sabi tiny celadon (seiji) incense brazier on a keyaki (zelkova ) wood base. The celadon incense burner has metal top and comes in a signed paulownia (kiri) wood box. For the tea ceremony, this Taisho Period c. 1920 piece is splendid. We can`t read the kanji as it is worn away. Celadon incense burner is roughly 3 cm by 3 cm. The keyaki stand is hexagonal and is 12 cm in diameter. Shipping included.

Great Taisho Period C.1920 'Koi' bronze carp swimming up the waterfall without the waterfall. Great patina. Actually holds water and is an ikebana flower vase for the tea ceremony. The carp represents courage and determination as it swims up the waterfall as depicted in many paintings and art works. Thick antique Japanese 'aka' or red bronze which dates this piece to late Edo Period when red bronze was predominant. Wonderful raised gourd handle attachments anchor the bronze handle. Gourds were considered lucky charms in traditional Japan. The bronze lid is a dragon floating in buddhist clouds. This antique Japanese shinto shrine plaque is from the late Meiji Period c.1890. The characters read 'Inari Jingya' (Inari Shrine). Many shinto shrines have a separate structure where Inari Daimyojin, the deity of abundant rice harvests and wealth in all forms, is worshipped. The guardians of such a sanctuary are two foxes, one carrying a jewel or scroll giving power, the other a key to a chest of treasures. c.1890. (25" x 18") (64cm x 46cm). This is a rare and special Buddhist Daruma that we found in a private collection. Daruma is the revered Buddhist icon that brought dharma, the Buddhist teachings from China and India to Japan. He was so determined to reach enlightenment that he decided to sit till his legs fell off. Actually, legend has it that he fell asleep sitting so he cut his eyelids off to stay awake and they fell to the ground whereby green tea seedlings sprouted. Fired in a Hagi kiln with beautiful white glaze and fabulous features. The eyebrows alone make this piece a must. Absolutely a museum piece. c.1880. (16" x 8") (41cm x 20cm). In the origianl box with the characters "Shippo Yaki" and "Tsuru no Kabin" meaning cloisonne and crane flower vase. This c.1920 flower vase has a ring of flowers at both the neck and base and inbetween on silky black is a flock of cranes in flight. In the original maroon lacquered wood box which has the Japanese characters "Hachiman Daibosatsu" on the front, the box also has written on the side, "Monchiru To Gin Kin Tsukuri" meaning this gumbai has scattered mons or family crests and is made of sliver and gold. The edge is silver. On the actual gumbai there are also the characters 'Hachiman Daibosatsu' in raised relief, meaning the boddhisattva is from the Hachiman Shrine. C.1910.
