Rare Japanese lacquered letter box with beautiful raised maki-e maple trees, river and mountains. The scene is from the 'hyaku isshu' the classic 101 ancient great poems. The poem referred to in this poem is by the venerated Ariwara no Narihara. In the upper right hand corner of the box is the kanji with the first line of the poem, "Chihaya Furu Kamiyo" The river in the lower right hand corner has the last line of the poem, "Kuguru To Wa". Basically the poem says that in the ancient mystical age when only gods lived, to see the Tatsuta River dyed crimson red with maple leaves in a shibori pattern was something even the gods themselves could never see. The makie is executed perfectly with stunning maple leaves and a red flow of the imagination in the middle. A collector's piece. $1200. (h:44cm x w:34cm x d:13cm). Very rare and unusual wood tiled village shrine from Dema - mura village in Mie Province. Dated the year of the tiger C.1818 the shrine houses gods and happiness. Signed on the back with the date and maker, Fujiwara Shokichi. Cypress wood with a bronze lock on the doors to the inner chamber. Exceptionally rare zen buddhist temple roof tile form the Meiji Period C.1890 of a Flaming Jewel or Hoju in Japanese. Would have been at one of the four corners of the temple or the at the end of the roof crest. The flaming jewel or sacred wishing gem is found everywhere in Buddhist iconology as a symbol of the void and purity. This tile is made of clay. Very good condition which is remarkable. Fantastic Meiji Period c.1885 earthenware storage jar from Shigaraki, one of Japan's pottery and cermics centers In Edo (17th, 18th) and Meiji Period 1868-1912. Wood fired in a 'nobori gama' climbing kiln, the natural ash glazes produce startling textures and patterns. The Shigaraki clays have 'choseki' or white stone which means long life. Fantastic Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu in a zushi altar. Edo Period C.1865. This travelling altar has an inscription on the inside reading "Dai Hanya meaning heart sutra and the name of Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto. . The kannnon has many heads on her head. Her face is just lovely. It is old and the feet are broken as well as the stand she sits on. The zushi is in remarkably good condition with minor lacquer wear. Kannon is 12" tall. Rare and very art deco wood tea shop kanban sign from Uji in south Kyoto, famed for its tea fields and tea production in the 1700`s and 1800`s until the present.
