Early 1920`s Yamabushi Shinto ascetic`s pigrim coat with the Heart Sutra written on it. Made of asa or fiber, the Pilgrim would go around Shikoku to the 88 shrines there reciting the heart sutra and getting a temple stamp from each temple on the coat. Sanscrit letters on the sleave. Fabulous old mingei folk art textile from late Meiji Period C.1900 of a mix of kasuri ikat with sashiko over part of the ikat similar to a boro textile. Spectacular Meiji Period maru obi c.1900. Woven on both sides with a jacquard loom, the blue/green dyes make this a superb example of a Kyoto style obi. The motifs are fans with pine, plum, bamboo, chrysanthemum and cranes; all auspicious symbols of happiness and good fortune. Excellent condition. Can be made into table runners or hangings.
