Wonderful mingei folk art wood & lacquer sake shop sign. Taisho Period, C.1915. The name of the sake is `Shirayuki` White Snow Sake. Red lettering on left side is is a poem: senshu kanshaku fuyo kiri meaning that even after 1000 years the makers wish this sake will be of the highest quality and shared and enjoyed by everyone. 21" tall and 16" wide. Exceptional Large shingon buddhist temple bell dated Meiji 44 (C.1912). Also inscribed is the temple from where it is from: Shinkou-Ji in Hisano village in Okayama Ken. The head monk`s name is also inscribed: Ota Ryonen. This temple was established in 739AD. The striker is also very large, lacquered wood with goat skin covering. Very fine example of Taisho Period C.1920 Japanese bamboo flower baskets. Two difficult techniques are employed in this Basket. A nawa-ami or twining technique is used as well as a mat plaiting (gozame-ami). With the nawa - ami , two or more wefts pass around the warps. In addition the wefts themselves move up and down over one another. A beautiful effect is achieved with both weaves. In addition, a root handle is used with a rich patina. This japanese buddhist temple bell is dated on the bell Anei 2 C.1773. It is larger than most temple bells we have seen. On the bell is inscribed a Jodo-shu Sutra poem: the essence is the bell`s sound represents the Buddha`s voice or true word and is very deep and enlightened. It sounds in the 10 directions. This bell is signed by Ota Seibei Shigetsu, from one of the most famous Chudo Foundries & families famous in Edo Period. He made a reknown bell for Jakko-in in Ohara north of Kyoto. Estabished in C.1357, they were making bells and tea pots for over 400 years before they went out of business in 1961. They were connected to Enkoji Temple in Shiga. H:31" x Diameter:17". Beautiful undulating keyaki (zelkova) wood hearth hook to stabalize the pot over the irori or floor hearth in the old style japanese minka farmhouses. Meiji Period C.1900. Rope wear in the crook of the hook is the tell tale sign of age. Fake, modern ones are different and don`t have that wear. Minor cracks that have been filled in but covered in rich patina and smoke from old hearth fires. H:23" x W:18".

Superb jizaikagi fish made of keyaki or zelkova, the highest quality of wood in traditional Japan. The fish was used to stabalize the the pot over the cooking hearth in old minka farmhouses. Smoked from years of cooking smoke, a rich patina remains. Taisho Period C. 1920. Beautifully carved and not a fake. Length: 11" x 6". Great condition.

Fantastic late Meiji Period C.1905 egret incense burner. Standing on a field of bamboo leaves, the egret is standing on one leg and looking back over its shoulder.
