Superb jizaikagi fish made of keyaki or zelkova, the highest quality of wood in traditional Japan. The fish was used to stabalize the the pot over the cooking hearth in old minka farmhouses. Smoked from years of cooking smoke, a rich patina remains. Taisho Period C. 1920. Beautifully carved and not a fake. Length: 11" x 6". Great condition.

Fantastic late Meiji Period C.1905 egret incense burner. Standing on a field of bamboo leaves, the egret is standing on one leg and looking back over its shoulder. The detail on the head and feathers is a masterpiece. The body feathers are in fine relief and come off to reveal the incense ash and cavity. Height: 10" x 7". Excellent condition. Wonderful Keyaki (zelkova) wood dragon carving which was in between two major beams of a buddhist temple. The dragon has glass eyes and is holding the glass hoju flaming jewel in one claw. Fantastic pair of Edo Period temple bronze hanging lanterns with a swirl motif on the metal. Dated with nengo Kyoho 9 (1724) the lanterns were later modified in the Taisho Period C.1920 with iron pipes on the top to allow electricity and bulb on the inside. Can be lit up. Completely Wabi Sabi tiny celadon (seiji) incense brazier on a keyaki (zelkova ) wood base. The celadon incense burner has metal top and comes in a signed paulownia (kiri) wood box. For the tea ceremony, this Taisho Period c. 1920 piece is splendid. We can`t read the kanji as it is worn away. Celadon incense burner is roughly 3 cm by 3 cm. The keyaki stand is hexagonal and is 12 cm in diameter. Shipping included.

Don`t like to use the word cute but these early Meiji Period C.1880 Oribe Yuki Daruma (Daruma Snowman) sake cups are exceptional. Japanese call snowmen `Yuki Daruma` Daruma was a monk who brought zen buddhism to Japan. Maybe used for sencha tea ceremonies but we recommend for sake. A few nicks here and there, see pics. Part of a pair of buddhist temple carvings gold gilt lacquered and dated Kansei 5 (1793). the motif is of cherry blossoms. They were re-gilted in Taisho 11 (1923). They were dedicted to a buddhist temple, Juzai-In in Imamachi village by a monk from Toji Temple in Kyoto, Gensei XV. The gilt was painted by Sanbon Suekichi. Great condition. H:20" x length: 28". Museum piece hinoki (cypress) wood carved lacquered ramma from a buddhist temple, Juzai-In in Imamachi village in Edo Period. The piece is dated Kansei 5 (1793). It was re-gilted in Taisho 11 (1923). Fantastic Japanese Kanji caligraphy taken from an Edo Period C.1870 byobu screen. There were 2 6ft screens each with 6 panels of huge caligraphy characters from a zen poem. These characters mean `MEI BEN` or Right Speech. Conditions is very good with minor staining of the paper. See pictures. We framed this one. We have the other 11 unframed. Artist unknown.
