Important late Meiji Period C.1900 Shigaraki tsubo or tea leaf jar. Shigaraki being of course one of the 7 great pottery centers of feudal Japan. The slip glaze on this Tsubo drips with texture and clumps of the glaze give this jar a remarkable art deco modernistic feel even though it was wood fired in a climbing kiln over 100 years ago. Lovely gold leaf background with three cranes frolicing among the pines, camelia and chrysanthemum flowers on the bank of a swirling blue river. Rare and serene stone guardian diety made of granite from the Edo Period C.1850. Stands on a stone base made with lotus leafs in relief. The Lotus being one of the main symbols of purity. Stellar Taisho Period C.1920 bronze crane with riding sage tea ceremony incense censor or koro. We haven`t seen one of these in years. The bronze work on the wings and feet is first class. Old farmhouse jizaikagi hearth hook that kept the pot stabilized over the irori or hearth in a minka or traditional japanese farmhouse. Made of Zelkova or keyaki, the highest grade wood in Japan indicating it was from a well to do family. Almost art deco as an art object, the condition is excellent. Invoking the feeling of an ascetic sage who has withdrawn from the world to the tea house to drink tea, this beautiful bronze hut koro or incense censor was used for the tea ceremony in the Taisho Period, C.1920. Most of these kind of bronzes these days are fakes; this one is the real McCoy. Wonderful bronze work on the roof ridge and the roof itself. Very rare dated Tempo 13 (C.1842) lacquered `Omiki` sacred sake lid for the offering to the Inari Shrine god, Inari Dai Myojin, the Shinto fox kami or god. Comes in the original paulownia wood box with cotton cover and inscription of town name (Toyoura Village, in Shiga province outside of Kyoto ) and donors name, Kita Tanaka. Fantastic Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu in a zushi altar. Edo Period C.1865. This travelling altar has an inscription on the inside reading "Dai Hanya meaning heart sutra and the name of Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto. . The kannnon has many heads on her head. Her face is just lovely. It is old and the feet are broken as well as the stand she sits on. The zushi is in remarkably good condition with minor lacquer wear. Kannon is 12" tall. One of a kind Meiji Period c.1900 shrine altar made of cedar with copper metal fittings. Chysanthemum on top front indicates connection with Imperial Family as does the picture of the Meiji Period Emperor on inside. The shrine is thin 6" and hangs on a wall. Exceptional and rare Meiji Period C.1890 bronze Shachihoko or mythical dragon carp Koro or incense censor. . Shachi or Shachihoko were frequently used as roof ornaments in the Edo period (1600-1868) and found atop castles, tower gates, and samurai homes. These fish-shaped ornaments are placed at both ends of the main roof ridge, with the male Shachi placed on the left and the female Shachi on the right. The creatures are thought to provide protection against fire, as they are attributed with the power to control rain. This dragon /carp has a lid on the upper tail. Not sure if it is original or if it has been replaced. Piece is in excellent condition. Ask for shipping quote.
