Very unusual black lacquered wooden buddhist temple lamp we believe from a Shingon buddhist temple C.1950. Quite large at 80cm tall and a width of 62cm. Rich black lacquer on wood with six sided panels with a fine carved vine diaper motif. The front panel has a gold lacquered crest. Rare and exceptional Otafuku mask by one of Japan's preeminent masters of the modern era, Tamaya Shoubei 7th. He was famouse in Gifu for his karakuri - ningyoshi (wind-up dolls). All painstakingly hand made and delicately constructed. He was chosen to restore the Chahakobi Ningyo, one of the first karakuri ningyos among others including a famous karakuri ningyo in the Gion Festival in Kyoto. This Otafuku mask was a side pleasure and it is signed on the back. Made of paulownia wood and gofun crushed oyster shell paint. Excelent condition. With wood box (not original).
