Impact, large bronze lantern from the 1950's. Thick bronze with hexagonal shape. One panel has the character 'hayashi' which means forest. One panel is a door that is hinged and opens. Inside at the top is a socket for light bulb. Needs to be re-wired for electric lighting but wires are thick and in good condition. Very good condition. Ask for shipping quote. Very unusual black lacquered wooden buddhist temple lamp we believe from a Shingon buddhist temple C.1950. Quite large at 80cm tall and a width of 62cm. Rich black lacquer on wood with six sided panels with a fine carved vine diaper motif. The front panel has a gold lacquered crest. Quite exceptional murashi-do bronze hibachi in the original box signed and dated Taisho Period 11 April (c.1922). Heavy red bronze was used and when the bronze is red hot it is dipped in hot oil to achieve the mottled colorations of the metal. The piece is then smoked with rice straw for setting and more coloring. Would be stunning as a dinner table center piece with flowers. Excellent condition. Ask for shipping quote. Exceptional bronze craftsmanship from one of Japan's premier post war bronze masters, Sawada Seiko. Born in 1894, Sawada was awarded numerous Art prizes and was asked to judge most of the important, prestigeous art competitions. This fabulous bronze vase c. 1950 has wave diaper motif around the neck with swallows in raised relief. The handles are mythical buddhist elephants. Slight bronze discoloration from age. Wonderful tripod legged bronze 'koro' incense burner in the chinese style. The lid has three lotus blossoms at the top on a thunder diaper motif. The handles are also lotus blossoms and leaves. The bronze is very sold and the three tripod legs add an art deco feel. The lid has a bit of an undulation near the lotus blossoms and the lid has to be shifted to shut properly. Sensational 'Hakudo' white bronze (alloy of bronze and nickel) flower vase by the renown master Tadao Shoda. Shoda is from Sano City in Tochigi Prefecture which has a 1000 year history of being the home of the famous Tenmyo cast metal works. Most of the highest quality weapons of the Kamakura and Edo Periods came from these masters. Shoda won the Sano Renaissance Gold Prize. Just lovely antique Japanese Taisho Period c.1925 bronze flower vase with cranes under a moon in superb raised relief. Hotsuma Katori was born Meiji Period c.1874 and died in 1954. He was a graduate of the prestigious Tokyo Art School in 1891 winning honors as the top student and artist. He won the silver prize In the 1900 Paris World Expo. His works are in the Kyoto National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum. His son, also a bronze craftsman, is a National Treasure. Comes with wood stand. Perfect condition. c.1925.
