The exact basket is on page 79 of the definitive japanese basket book, Containing Beauty: Japanese Bamboo Fower Baskets. The basket in that book was made by the master, Kogetsu so we are thinking this basket is by the same although unsigned. Mitsuo Kano (1903-1970) was a very great First Class Japanese Potter. His famous works sold for high prices at auction houses such as Christie's both before and after his passing. He won the Blue-Ribbon Award of one of the most famous Japanese Art Exhibitions, Nitten Exhibition in 1949. Known for his exquisite glazes, this vase is no exception. Oblong in shape and very dynamic. And very large at 41cm tall by 44cm wide. Kano Mitsuo studied under Komori Shinobu (1889-1962) and at the Kyoto City Pottery Research School. His work is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He won the Ministry of Education Grand Prize in 1998.
