Exceptionally lovely and well carved Kamakura-bori lacquered hibachi. Kamakura is religiuos center south of Tokyo where kamakura-bori was born in the Edo Period. After carving out of one piece of wood , usually gingo wood, the carving is lacquered and painstakingly polished. This large hibachi has peonies and sunflowers. Wonderful art deco c.1925 'inban' transfer printing charger from the late Taisho Period. The design is etched onto a copper plate and then cobalt ink is applied and a rice paper picks up the design and transfers it onto a porcelain and it is fired.
