Mitsuo Kano (1903-1970) was a very great First Class Japanese Potter. His famous works sold for high prices at auction houses such as Christie's both before and after his passing. He won the Blue-Ribbon Award of one of the most famous Japanese Art Exhibitions, Nitten Exhibition in 1949. Known for his exquisite glazes, this vase is no exception. Oblong in shape and very dynamic. And very large at 41cm tall by 44cm wide. Kano Mitsuo studied under Komori Shinobu (1889-1962) and at the Kyoto City Pottery Research School. His work is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He won the Ministry of Education Grand Prize in 1998. Superb Shishi lion wood festival mask for the lion dance at the New Years festival in the Showa Period C.1930. The Japanese lion consists of a wooden, lacquered head called a “shishi-gashira”, literally, a lion’s head, and a characteristic body of red dyed cloth with white designs. It can be manipulated by a single person, or two people, one of whom manipulates the head. As with Chinese lions, the make of the head and designs on the body will differ from region to region, and even from school to school. The Shi-Shi-Mai, the Lion dance, is known to have the power to ward off evil spirits and summon the god of harvest and wealth, bringing prosperity. The tradition has been passed for generations everywhere in Japan. It is performed at many Shinto festivals. This mask has a mouth that opens and closes and hair on the forehead.
