Nagasaki Sansai is a unique pottery style and firing technique that was popular in Japan in Nagasaki in the early 1900`s. The industry was wiped out in the war and revived afterwards by Eguchi Hiroshi. He was born C.1922 and died C.1988. He rebuilt the Nagasaki Kiln and brought Nagasaki Sansai back to prosperity. The Showa Emperor bought a piece in Showa 40 (1966). Nagasaki Sansai uses three colors and each piece is fired 3 x. As they get older the colors soften and natural tiny firing cracks emerge. This pair of fish are exceptional and representative pieces of Nagasaki Sansai. They come in a signed paulownia wood original box. Large fish: H:18cm x W:20cm; small fish: H:11cm x W:13cm. In Japanese mythology and folklore, Tenjin is the Shinto kami of scholarship, the deification of a scholar, poet, and politician named Sugawara no Michizane. Ten means sky and jin means god or deity. The original meaning of Tenjin, sky deity, is almost the same as that of Raijin (a god of thunder). Cows are a popular motif at Tenjin shrines, as they are believed to be his servants. In particular, statues of a nade-ushi, “stroking cow”, are meant to cure ills if you touch them. This wonderful bronze cow was was signed and made by the bronze artist Shiba in the early Showa Period C.1935. Comes in the original paulownia wood box which is also signed. 8" long and 4" deep.
