Museum piece from the Late Edo Period (could be earlier)from Iga in Mie Prefecture near Shigaraki another great kiln producing area outside Kyoto. This style of Tsubo or jar is called 'Senbei Tsubo' and it was thought to either have stored money or tea leaves. Classic 'hi-iro' red colorings of the clay due to crystalization when fired at high temperatures. Fired in an underground 'anagama' using copious amounts of wood for three days. Natural flowing vitrified glaze 'biidoro' creates amazing textures and fabulous glaze patterns and colorations. 'Geta in' markings on the base. Exceptional. H:29cm x W18cm. Ask for shipping quote.

The essence of Oribe pottery can be seen in this late Edo Period C.1860 brazier used for heating the old houses. The brown feldspar markings along with the trademark Oribe olive green glazes on a white hagi base truly epitomize a perfect pottery piece. A kiln scars which occured in the firing (or maybe they are chips) on the rim (see pictures) but they are so old they definitely are 'aji' or character. A museum piece. Very rare antique Japanese tea leaf storage jar fired in the late Edo Period c.1870 in Tamba north of Kyoto. Tamba was one of the giant seven kilns famed in Edo and Meiji for their ceramics. Tamba was especially known for its tea vessels. This kotamba tea leaf storage vessel is called kotamba, with 'ko' meaning old, to distinguish it from post -1867 ceramics. In excellent condition. Shochu, a distilled sake much like cheap vodka was produced in shochu jugs by shigaraki kilns in quantity during the late Meiji Period (1867-1912). The characteristic form is easily recognizable; a large bottle shaped jar in the classic Shigaraki shape. This piece is very rare and decorated with shigaraki 'tiger fur' glaze, which is achieved by splashing Hagi-white glaze over the dark base.
