Late Meiji Period, c.1900 pair of Japanese antique bronze 'Shishi" lions frolicing with a bronze temari ball. One of the lion pups is on its back and there is a curved inverted hollow on its belly where a bronze replica of a temari ball sits. The other shishi lion is pouncing on it with its front two paws. The lifelike action gives this bronze pair a fabulous, playful ambience and the expressions on their faces is a masterpiece. Fabulous condition. c.1900. (14" x 14" x 9½") (36cm x 36cm x 24cm). A pair of dark green lacquered wood antique Japanese candlestands on a lotus base with gold gilt lotus flower candle holders. Lotus is the sacred zen Buddhist symbol of purity. The stands sit on signed red lacquered bases. On the stems in carved relief are red lacquered flower decorations. Each stem has written on it the name of the donor of these candlestands - Seishu (donor) Murakami Myoko. On the bottom of the bases is the name of the craftsman, Honda Kenko Dai (maker). The insets of the gold lacquered lotus tops have copper liners which are loose and prong. Very unusual. The bottom of the base has some lacquer wear but the visible candlestands are in excellent condition. c.1880. (21" x 8") (53cm x 20cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $130.

This large and solid Bizen vase is the work of one of Japan's leading Bizen kilns, Shoen. The original box is signed "Bizen yaki" Bizen ceramic, "Tsubo" vase, and the name Shoen. The wood firing and ash have produced remarkable colorings, shades and textures. One of the best pieces we have seen out of bizen in a long time. c.1973. Extremely heavy item.
