Very rare in Japanese antiques to find a Naneki-neko happy cat carved in wood and lacquered. Most are ceramics. Called Maneki-neko of beckoning cat in Japan, these good luck cats were usually placed by businesses outside their establishments to encourage more business and good fortune to enter. This black lacquered lucky cat has the Japanese characters for "fukuneko" carved on its front meaning happy cat. Taisho period c.1930. (14" x 8" x 8") (35cm x 20cm x 20cm). Japanese character from a famous story of a Kyoto merchant's son, Fukusuke, who had an oversized head. The mechant's family treated him with much love and soon their business prospered. These Japanese boys dancing while holding a rope between them have been remounted on a stand covered with puppet theatre book paper (jorui). Their expressions and old cloth dates their age. Looks like the hands and feet have been touched up but detracts in no way from the attractiveness of the dolls. Would make a great addition to your antique collection. c.1880.
