Very rare in Japanese antiques to find a Naneki-neko happy cat carved in wood and lacquered. Most are ceramics. Called Maneki-neko of beckoning cat in Japan, these good luck cats were usually placed by businesses outside their establishments to encourage more business and good fortune to enter. Japanese character from a famous story of a Kyoto merchant's son, Fukusuke, who had an oversized head. The mechant's family treated him with much love and soon their business prospered.
