Striking Showa Period c.1930 negoro lacquered tray. Negoro lacquering techniques were developed in the Edo Period at Negoro Temple in Wakayama Pref. putting on layers of black lacquer then covering with red lacquer and burnishing until the black rubbed through. Exquisite ceramic Kannon statue of the japanese goddess of mercy, c.1930. Signed with a hanko stamp on the bottom but we can't read. The facial expression is oozing with compassion and serenity. Quite exceptional murashi-do bronze hibachi in the original box signed and dated Taisho Period 11 April (c.1922). Heavy red bronze was used and when the bronze is red hot it is dipped in hot oil to achieve the mottled colorations of the metal. The piece is then smoked with rice straw for setting and more coloring. Would be stunning as a dinner table center piece with flowers. Excellent condition. Ask for shipping quote. Employing a `seidoyu` dark green glaze, it is a type of oribe pottery produced in Gifu Prefecture only, (north of Kyoto) since the early 17th century. Sensational eye-catching set of 5 small blue and white plates using the 'inban' transfer printing process to put this exceptional design on porcelain plates. This design is a first; tsubo vases on a cloud diaper background. Very art deco feel and were made in c. 1925. Exceptional Taisho Period c.1925 bronze flower vase with a koi (carp) swimming up a waterfall symbolizing courage and determination. On the opposite side are the Japanese characters, 'Ken & To' in raised relief, meaning to persist and challenge. The vase is signed by Minobe and was most likely commissioned as a gift for someone facing a challenging journey or task. The upper kanji 'Ken' has a tiny light scratch in the upper left stroke as well as the area above it, but imperceptable to the camera and basically the eye. Ask for shipping quote.
