Invoking the feeling of an ascetic sage who has withdrawn from the world to the tea house to drink tea, this beautiful bronze hut koro or incense censor was used for the tea ceremony in the Taisho Period, C.1920. Most of these kind of bronzes these days are fakes; this one is the real McCoy. Wonderful bronze work on the roof ridge and the roof itself. Aka Do or red bronze was used and it creates a lovely patina on the hut walls. Comes with keyaki (zelkova ) wood stand. Hut is 5" tal and 4 " wide. Ask for shipping quote.

Very rare dated Tempo 13 (C.1842) lacquered `Omiki` sacred sake lid for the offering to the Inari Shrine god, Inari Dai Myojin, the Shinto fox kami or god. Comes in the original paulownia wood box with cotton cover and inscription of town name (Toyoura Village, in Shiga province outside of Kyoto ) and donors name, Kita Tanaka. Fantastic Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu in a zushi altar. Edo Period C.1865. This travelling altar has an inscription on the inside reading "Dai Hanya meaning heart sutra and the name of Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto. . The kannnon has many heads on her head. Her face is just lovely. It is old and the feet are broken as well as the stand she sits on. The zushi is in remarkably good condition with minor lacquer wear. Kannon is 12" tall. One of a kind Meiji Period c.1900 shrine altar made of cedar with copper metal fittings. Chysanthemum on top front indicates connection with Imperial Family as does the picture of the Meiji Period Emperor on inside. The shrine is thin 6" and hangs on a wall. Exceptional and rare Meiji Period C.1890 bronze Shachihoko or mythical dragon carp Koro or incense censor. . Shachi or Shachihoko were frequently used as roof ornaments in the Edo period (1600-1868) and found atop castles, tower gates, and samurai homes. These fish-shaped ornaments are placed at both ends of the main roof ridge, with the male Shachi placed on the left and the female Shachi on the right. The creatures are thought to provide protection against fire, as they are attributed with the power to control rain. This dragon /carp has a lid on the upper tail. Early 1920`s Yamabushi Shinto ascetic`s pigrim coat with the Heart Sutra written on it. Made of asa or fiber, the Pilgrim would go around Shikoku to the 88 shrines there reciting the heart sutra and getting a temple stamp from each temple on the coat. Sanscrit letters on the sleave. Fabulous lacquered wood carving of a Rakan by Tamakaji Zokoku, the most famous lacquer carver of the 19th century. Was accorded samurai status in recognition of his work by the clan Lord in 1835. Was given the name Tamakaji in 1839. Works auctioned in Christies. Jūroku Rakan literally means “Sixteen Arhats.” The saintly ascetics who gathered at the death and nirvana (nehan 涅槃) of the Buddha Sakyamuni (Shaka 釈迦) and were ordered by him to remain in this world as witnesses to the truth of the Law or Buddhist teachings. Typical depictions in painting or sculpture show them with aged faces, emaciated bodies and the frugal clothing of Indian ascetics or wise men. Great condition with a bit of minor damage on one finger. Comes in original paulownia box. H: 55cm x W:18cm. Ask for shipping quote.
