Meiji Period shrine roof gable has the "noshi" motif carved. Symbolizing abundance and celebration, this shrine gable comes from a shrine in a domain south of Kyoto. Japanese antique bronze zen sage riding a horse. Most of these scenes come from zen parables extolling the virtues of tranquility. This late 19th century bronze is a sage with a removable hat. There is a small hole where a pin could attach the sage to the horse but he sits perfectly balanced without it. Very elegant. c.1890. (11" x 9" x 5") (28cm x 23cm x 13cm). From the inside of a huge buddhist temple 'butsudan' or enclosed zen altar, this magnificently antique Japanese hand carved Meiji c.1880 gold gilt altar has intricately carved dragons on the sides and flowers on the front top. 'Maki-e' or raised lacquered lotus flowers adorn the back wall in the chamber. The roof itself is a maize of delicately carved buddhist architectural pieces. A few minor pieces missing here and there, but all in all in super condition and quite rare. c.1880. (34" x 25" x 14") (87cm x 64cm x 36cm). Shipping/insurance included in price.

Edo Period c.1850 antique Japanese zen temple bell from Kyushu in the south of Japan. Written on the bell is the temple name, Hijikan-In, a buddhist temple in Chikugo, Yanagawa-Han, Kawaharauchi village, Kyushu. Yanagawa Han was an Edo Period samurai fief but is now called Fukuoaka in modern Japan. Thick Edo bronze and fabulous reverberating sound. c.1850. (15" x 12") (38cm x 30cm). Signed on the bottom of the jizo bosatsu (bodhisattva) is the date in Japanese - Tenwa 1 which is 1681. This bodhisattva of compassion is the Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva. His vow is to save all sentient beings. Often seen in priestly garb with tonsured head and holding the 'Hoju' or buddhist jewel of wisdom. The bottom of the stand he sits on is intricately carved with buddhist clouds and lotus flowers. We don't believe it is the original stand but it is a perfect match. Hands in fantastic condition. Almost art deco in appearance, this bronze Buddhist temple flower vase was used on the altar in a Buddhist temple. Wonderful Meiji Period c.1880 bronze, the vase has two hand-like decoration attachments off to the sides. On the vase itself are bamboo plants in relief against a lightning bolt diaper design. Bamboos were a symbol of flexibility and emptiness. The lightning bolt diaper is a well used Buddhist motif. Great condition. c.1880. (7" x 6") (18cm x 15cm). The most sensational antique Japanese bronze tea ceremony 'suiban' flower vessel we have seen here at Kodo Arts. Meiji Period c.1890 thick red bronze with especially spectacular bronze work on the corners. Legs are knarled roots and intertwined knot motif decorates all four corners in raised relief. Delicately sculptered bronzed Buddhist elephant with a detachable pagoda top. This turn of the century antique Japanese incense burner has a rich patina. This antique Japanese turn of the century lovely bronze incense burner is a beautiful example of the Japanese lost-wax casting technique favored at the end of the Meiji Period, c.1900. The lid has a mythical shishi on the top and the base is on tripod legs with repeating diaper design and figures in raised relief. Two arms extend to the sides and these are plum branches. Used as a decorative talisman on top of the roof gables of a Buddhist temple to ward off evil and protect the wooden temple from fires. This antique Japanese onigawara roof tile has a playful expression and there is licken growing on the right wing. Lovely antique gold gilt lacquer on Japanese cypress wood. These types of `Amida Nyorai` (Japanese) buddhas were commissioned by temple followers and donated to temples to earn merit or to pray for someones well being. This Amida Nyorai has a backgroung aureole halo arching forward over a standing buddha on a stand. Slight lacquer peeling on the base of the stand. The right hand is open in the Mudra of Fearlessness `semui-in` and the left is in the Gift-bestowing Mudra `yogan-in`. Age wear has brought out some of the undercoat of black lacquer.
