Antique Japanese black lacquered cypress wood altar with gold leaf inside. Metal fittings are of bronze. Inside is a fabulous Edo Period c.1850 standing wood sculpture of 'Juuichimen Kannon' the Eleven-Headed Kannon, god of mercy and compassion. This kannon has a crown of tiny bodhisattva heads with the head of the buddha at the top. A small standing image of Amida Buddha is in the front of the crown as well. This image has two arms; one with open palm, the other, in mudra of granting wishes. The face and hands are perfect with full patina. The feet and parts of the stand are missing due to age. A rare find for Kodo Arts, we are excited about this antique Japanese Edo Period c.1850 Buddhist temple lantern. The configuration is very unusual with the chrysanthemum middle section, the imperial royal family crest, sitting on a tripod legged base. Usually temple lantern come with a long stem. Delicately sculptered bronzed Buddhist elephant with a detachable pagoda top. This turn of the century antique Japanese incense burner has a rich patina. Excellent depiction of Ebisu, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan in bronze. Early Showa Period, C.1930, the detail and expression is fabulous. Written on his back is "Shin Chiku Oiwai" meaning this bronze sculpture was commissioned as a new house celebration gift. The names of the presenters are also written. Ebisu is holding a fish in one had and a bamboo fishing pole in the other. He is the patron of fisherman as well as the Shinto god of businessman. Shrines to him abound all over Japan. Japanese antique bronze zen sage riding a horse. Most of these scenes come from zen parables extolling the virtues of tranquility. This late 19th century bronze is a sage with a removable hat. Exceptional Late Meiji Period black and gold lacquered 'butsudan' buddhist home altar. The intricately carved altar inside is a masterpiece of delicate carvings. Black lacquered outer doors with bronze metal fittings open to inner doors with a round lattice widow. These also open revealing another world of a gold lacquered altar for one's dieties.
