Antique Japanese black lacquered cypress wood altar with gold leaf inside. Metal fittings are of bronze. Inside is a fabulous Edo Period c.1850 standing wood sculpture of 'Juuichimen Kannon' the Eleven-Headed Kannon, god of mercy and compassion. This kannon has a crown of tiny bodhisattva heads with the head of the buddha at the top. A small standing image of Amida Buddha is in the front of the crown as well. This image has two arms; one with open palm, the other, in mudra of granting wishes. The face and hands are perfect with full patina. The feet and parts of the stand are missing due to age. (Buddha 14½" x 5", altar 19" x 7" x 5") (Buddha 37cm x 13cm, altar 48cm x 18cm x 13cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $115.

A rare find for Kodo Arts, we are excited about this antique Japanese Edo Period c.1850 Buddhist temple lantern. The configuration is very unusual with the chrysanthemum middle section, the imperial royal family crest, sitting on a tripod legged base. Usually temple lantern come with a long stem. Museum quality bronze buddhist offering set for a buddhist altar. A flower vase, candlestand, and incense censer all with inlayed cranes and turtles, auspicious symbols of happiness, longevity and celebration. Original paulownia wood box dated Meiji 16 (1884, June) with the inscription of a hexogon cast 'Rokkaku Rougata Bori' and colored with straw smoke after firing to achieve the brown finish 'Sentoku Sangusoku'. In Japanese mythology and folklore, Tenjin is the Shinto kami of scholarship, the deification of a scholar, poet, and politician named Sugawara no Michizane. Ten means sky and jin means god or deity. The original meaning of Tenjin, sky deity, is almost the same as that of Raijin (a god of thunder). Cows are a popular motif at Tenjin shrines, as they are believed to be his servants. In particular, statues of a nade-ushi, “stroking cow”, are meant to cure ills if you touch them. This wonderful bronze cow was was signed and made by the bronze artist Shiba in the early Showa Period C.1935. Comes in the original paulownia wood box which is also signed. 8" long and 4" deep. Excellent depiction of Ebisu, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan in bronze. Early Showa Period, C.1930, the detail and expression is fabulous. Written on his back is "Shin Chiku Oiwai" meaning this bronze sculpture was commissioned as a new house celebration gift. The names of the presenters are also written. Ebisu is holding a fish in one had and a bamboo fishing pole in the other. He is the patron of fisherman as well as the Shinto god of businessman. Shrines to him abound all over Japan. Japanese antique bronze zen sage riding a horse. Most of these scenes come from zen parables extolling the virtues of tranquility. This late 19th century bronze is a sage with a removable hat. There is a small hole where a pin could attach the sage to the horse but he sits perfectly balanced without it. Very elegant. c.1890. (11" x 9" x 5") (28cm x 23cm x 13cm).
