Wonderful Keyaki (zelkova) wood dragon carving which was in between two major beams of a buddhist temple. The dragon has glass eyes and is holding the glass hoju flaming jewel in one claw. Fantastic pair of Edo Period temple bronze hanging lanterns with a swirl motif on the metal. Dated with nengo Kyoho 9 (1724) the lanterns were later modified in the Taisho Period C.1920 with iron pipes on the top to allow electricity and bulb on the inside. Can be lit up. Paper is worn and can be replaced with antique paper of same. Very large and in very good condition. See pics. H:27" x 17". Ask for shipping quote.

Part of a pair of buddhist temple carvings gold gilt lacquered and dated Kansei 5 (1793). the motif is of cherry blossoms. They were re-gilted in Taisho 11 (1923). They were dedicted to a buddhist temple, Juzai-In in Imamachi village by a monk from Toji Temple in Kyoto, Gensei XV. The gilt was painted by Sanbon Suekichi. Great condition. H:20" x length: 28". Museum piece hinoki (cypress) wood carved lacquered ramma from a buddhist temple, Juzai-In in Imamachi village in Edo Period. The piece is dated Kansei 5 (1793). It was re-gilted in Taisho 11 (1923). Exceptionally rare zen buddhist temple roof tile form the Meiji Period C.1890 of a Flaming Jewel or Hoju in Japanese. Would have been at one of the four corners of the temple or the at the end of the roof crest. The flaming jewel or sacred wishing gem is found everywhere in Buddhist iconology as a symbol of the void and purity. This tile is made of clay. Very good condition which is remarkable. Very unusual black lacquered wooden buddhist temple lamp we believe from a Shingon buddhist temple C.1950. Quite large at 80cm tall and a width of 62cm. Rich black lacquer on wood with six sided panels with a fine carved vine diaper motif. The front panel has a gold lacquered crest. A flower vase, candlestand, and incense censer all with inlayed cranes and turtles, auspicious symbols of happiness, longevity and celebration. Original paulownia wood box dated Meiji 16 (1884, June) with the inscription of a hexogon cast 'Rokkaku Rougata Bori' and colored with straw smoke after firing to achieve the brown finish 'Sentoku Sangusoku'.
