Exceptional C.1880 bronze lost-wax cast Meiji Period 'Jizo Bosatsu' or Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva. This bodhisattva vowed to save all sentient beings in all six realms of rebirth from the time of buddha's death until the appearance of Maitreya, the buddha of the future. Holding a staff which symbolizes the vow to to save. The halo has three flaming jewels or 'hoju' sacred wishing gems. Fine detail throughout and lovely , tranquil facial expression. H:30cm x 14cm. Very rare Edo Period C.1860 buddhist temple sutra hangings called "Kondosei Gyokuban". Usually 4 hang in a temple each with one of the dharma truths from the 'Nehan-kyo' or Nirvana sutra. Written on the left one is: Ze Sho Meppo meaning impermanence is the truth of the world. On the right: Shometsu Metsui meaning that all things arise and pass away. Museum quality Meiji Period c.1890 zen buddhist transom with 'Daki Myoga' crest and peony flower in negoro lacquer surrounded by scrolling vines made out of japanese cypress wood, black lacquered. Myoga is a japanese type of wild ginger and is a common family crest and is associated with buddhism. Showa Period C.1950 lacquered wood fish gong used in zen temples as a meal gong to call the monks. Very large zen buddhist temple bronze bell dated Showa 10 (C.1935). Inscribed on the bell is the date and the temple it was donated to: Saikoji Temple in Nara and the donor : Sugioka Kenichi. The bell has a fantastic, deep sound that goes forever. The bell stiker comes with a lacquer stand and the bell has a red laquered wood tripod stand. Height of the bell: 13" x diameter:14"
