Showa Period C.1950 lacquered wood fish gong used in zen temples as a meal gong to call the monks. A wooden mallet would strike the round circle in the center and the opening n the bottom of the fish would produce a thunderous clap. Some lacquer wear but in very good condition. See pictures. One of the most popular deities in Japan the Inari is thought to be a deity that descends from the mountains each spring to help with the rice cultivation. The fox is the deity's messenger. Many shrines and temples throughout Japan are dedicated to the Inari. One female and one male guard many shrines. Each has a sacred wish granting gem (hoju). This pair is ceramic C.1940. Very rare and esoteric Shingon Japanese Buddhist Inner Altar Mirror which is meant to symbolize the soul reflected. Shingon Buddhism is very much connected to Tibetan Buddhism thus the dazzling array of Tibetan colors. The mirror is made of bronze and the wood is cypress. Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. Esoteric Dainichi Nyorai buddha that stands for Vairochana - whom represents the cosmic life that surrounds us like the air we breathe. The proper name is Mahavairochana. His elaborately arranged hair is surmounted by a crown, and he wears jeweled ornaments. The remnants of which we can see on this buddha. He holds the wisdom mudra with the five fingers of the right hand wrapped around the left index finger. The buddha is from the end of the Edo Period C. 1860. Exceptional zen buddhist bronze temple bell with Negoro red lacquer wood stand, cushion and striker. The stiker is wood and the handle is black lacquered. The cushion is silk over cotton. The Negoro stand is older thanthe bell most likey late Meijiperiod, c.1900. The bell is c.1930 and has the japanese characters inscripeted on the bell: 'Tokusi Kinhori' or specially hand made pounded bronze. the sound resonates and seem to go on forever. Exceedingly rare Meiji Period c.1885 zen buddhist temple altar stands used for offerings. Japanese cypress wood carved and lacquered with layers of gold lacquer. The japanese characters on one side of each stand read: "Mitanisan Myohodoju" meaning belongs to Mitanisan Myohodo Temple and on the other "Seshu Tomachi - Saitotatsuji" the donator is Mr. Saitotatsuji of the town of Tomachi. Regal altar temple table from a zen buddhist temple in the Kyoto area. The top is Japanese 'keyaki' (zelkova) or elm. The carvings in relief are superior. Lotus flowers and leaves. Excellent depiction of Ebisu, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan in bronze. Early Showa Period, C.1930, the detail and expression is fabulous. Written on his back is "Shin Chiku Oiwai" meaning this bronze sculpture was commissioned as a new house celebration gift. The names of the presenters are also written. Ebisu is holding a fish in one had and a bamboo fishing pole in the other. He is the patron of fisherman as well as the Shinto god of businessman. Shrines to him abound all over Japan. One of the finest and biggest zen buddhist 'zushi' travelling altars we have ever seen. C. 1860 late Edo Period. Most likely the owner was a high ranking samurai. She holds a lotus in her left hand symbolizing purity and ability to rise from the mud to transform into a beautiful flower. She stands on a stand of lotus pedals with large lotus leaves.
