Extremely rare Edo Period c. 1850 zen buddhist temple altar sacred inner chamber mirror. This mirror reflects the emptyness and void state the mind should achieve. The wood stand that holds the mirror is carved out of keyaki 'zelkova' wood in the lotus flower motif. There is minor wear on the wood. Mirror itself is bronze and on one side has the phoenix, the protector of the dharma (truth) in raised relief. Signed by Sawamori. The mirror has a bronze crown of flames. Some pieces of the flame are missing. The bottom of the mirror that fits into the stand has a broken piece that can't be seen. Ask for shipping quote. H:44cm x W:34cm

The lacquered stand is original with carved buddhist clouds in gold gilt and the base in vermillion lacquer. The mirror itself is new and has been added. Serene and peaceful Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva or Jizo Bosatsu wood carving c.1920 Taisho Period with black lacquered robes and gold gilt chest and face. The Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva vowed to save all sentient beings in all six realms of rebirth between the time of Buddha's death and the appearance of Maitreya, the buddha of the future. The staff symbolizes his vow. This bosatsu is rare in that he has a halo with three sacred wishing gems. One hand is missing but other hand and feet in good condition. Comes in paulownia wood box. Two huge coils of hand carved Tochigi wood 'juzu' or zen buddhist prayer beads from the late Meiji Period, c.1900. The lacquered box they came in is even better as it is lined with original woodblock pictures of geishas. The bigger coil, with slightly larger beads, when double-coiled stands 6ft. Stunning lacquered buddhist altar in fantastic condition considering it is dated on the back 'Ganbun 2' C.1737. Copper metal fittings and inside has carved buddhist swirl and clouds in gold gilt. Both doors swing open on hinges. The inscription on the back also reads: Cho-mi-doshi jugatsu or october in the ancient zodiac calendar. Wonderful and rare wood carving of Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who went to China to bring back to Japan the teachings of Buddha. Late Meiji Period c. 1900 with glass eyes and glass 'juzu' prayer beads. In one hand he holds the vajra and the other, prayer beads.
