Stunning lacquered buddhist altar in fantastic condition considering it is dated on the back 'Ganbun 2' C.1737. Copper metal fittings and inside has carved buddhist swirl and clouds in gold gilt. Both doors swing open on hinges. The inscription on the back also reads: Cho-mi-doshi jugatsu or october in the ancient zodiac calendar. Wonderful and rare wood carving of Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who went to China to bring back to Japan the teachings of Buddha. Late Meiji Period c. 1900 with glass eyes and glass 'juzu' prayer beads. In one hand he holds the vajra and the other, prayer beads. Sitting on an abbot's chair, black lacquered with copper metal fittings. The left hand has been reattached and one of the chair's metal fittings is slightly loose. Ask for shipping quote. Wonderful Shinto Shrine votive painting c. 1850 depicting the famed Genji samurai general Minamoto Yoshitsune fighting his rival Minamoto Yoshinaka at the Battle of Awazu in c.1184 in the Tale of the Genji. Superb buddhist temple roof carving of a ShiShi mythical Fu Dog to protect the temple from calamity. Dated Meiji Period, c.1890 the wood is hinoki, japanese cypress, and it has been mounted on an antique block of japanese keyaki or japanese elm. Meiji Period c.1890 zen buddhist temple lantern signed on the bottom by the maker, Urai Masuemon, and the place of the temple, Soraku-gun, Higashibata, in Okayama south of Kyoto. The under leafs on the top have buddhist cloud patterns as well as the main body. The metal is a copper alloy mixed with a bit of bronze. Superb Edo Period c. 1860 Mokugyo wood fish zen sutra chanting drum. Used when the monks would do evening and morning chanting. The monks would beat the drum with the cadence of the sutra while chanting. The japanese characters 'kinryushi' are carved on the front, meaning golden dragon. The wood is lacquered in many layers of negoro lacquer with gold gilt. The top and bottom of both sides is worn from all the drum strikes. (H:42cm; W: 45cm) Ask for shipping quote.

The mother of all daruma wood carvings. On the back of this Edo Period c.1700 masterpiece is engraved 'Genroku 13' (c.1700) ,'Saigenshin Tsukuri' carved by Saigenshin, a famous zen monk of the time. Also 'Kyosagaju' meaning he was from a temple in the Saga District of Western Kyoto. The Carving is a magnificent flow of lines and expression. Definitely a museum quality piece.
