Exceptionally fine Taisho Period c.1920 'hanakago' bamboo flower basket with some of the best knotwork Kodo Arts has seen. Shokosai I was the founder of a basket maker dynasty with Shokosai IV the last of a long line of spectacular craftsman. Shokosai I was born 1815 in western Japan. Died in 1897. This basket was made when he was 79 right before he passed away. The age when he made it is written on the original paulownia wood box lid. The name Shokosai I was also written on the box lid by his son Shokosai II along with the seals. The bottom of the basket is also signed. Shokosai I won many prizes at prestigious Exhibitions and was favored by Emperors and royalty. The basket features a simple but elegant weave and the inner container is also woven which is a first for our eyes. When we saw this basket, the vibration was something out of Sen no Rikyu.
