Fabulous Showa Period red lacquered buddhist temple 'andon' lamp with electric light bulb. The metal work is copper and the red lacquer is superbly done. The lamp has a fiber based paper (which we can have re-done upon request for free) and a Showa Period C. 1950 electric chord. We plugged it in and it works beautifully. We also have the pair. Taisho Period C.1920 traditional buddhist shi-shi lion festival mask, a guardian with magical powers. This item is a gashira or festival mask. This carved wooden Shishi mask is red and black lacquered and has movable jaw, tongue, and ears. Horse hair makes up the eyebrows and there is a green cotton robefor the lion's body which covers the dancers and bells attached to the mask. This shishi mask is used during the shishi-mai or lion dance and is often seen at shrine festivals and at New Year's, when performers visit each home in the neighborhood to cast charms against evil spirits and diseases while receiving offerings. Elegant Taisho Period C.1920 red negoro lacquered table with copper metal fittings. Very good condition. The negoro lacquer technique was developed by zen monks at Negoro-ji Temple in Wakayama in the Edo period to support the temple. It is many layers of lacquer burnished to achive a special red patina. Lovely black lacquered 'suzuri bako' caligraphy letter writing box with maki-e 'raised gold lacquered' bamboo on the outside and swallows frolicing on the inside of the box top. Ink dropper inside. Exceptionally lovely and well carved Kamakura-bori lacquered hibachi. Kamakura is religiuos center south of Tokyo where kamakura-bori was born in the Edo Period. After carving out of one piece of wood , usually gingo wood, the carving is lacquered and painstakingly polished. This large hibachi has peonies and sunflowers. Exceedingly rare Meiji Period c.1885 zen buddhist temple altar stands used for offerings. Japanese cypress wood carved and lacquered with layers of gold lacquer. The japanese characters on one side of each stand read: "Mitanisan Myohodoju" meaning belongs to Mitanisan Myohodo Temple and on the other "Seshu Tomachi - Saitotatsuji" the donator is Mr. Saitotatsuji of the town of Tomachi. One of the finest and biggest zen buddhist 'zushi' travelling altars we have ever seen. C. 1860 late Edo Period. Most likely the owner was a high ranking samurai. The altar stands 69cm tall and 47cm wide. The metal fittings are copper and exceptional. Inside is a gold gilt inner chamber. The condition is very good. Ask for shipping quote.

Exceptional Taisho Period c. 1910 'suzuri bako' maki-e lacquered caligraphy writing box. Sensational gold maki-e chrysanthemums some with silver leaf petals and some with raised maki-e or mother of pearl inlay. Chrysanthemum petals and leaves with gold maki-e and mother of pearl make up this elegant, rich mosiac. On the inside of the top are 3 gorgeous butterflies also in raised gold maki-e. The bottom inside has a silver ink pourer with a pine motif and a black nachi ink stone. The bottom of the bottom box has some worn away lacquer on the corners and on the top, one of the mother of pearl chrysanthemums has a crack. Otherwise in fabulous condition. Ask for shipping quote. Unbelievable signed and dated C. 1705 , June, black lacquered zen buddhist temple stand. Also written on the underside is that it was donated to a zen priest on an auspicious day by a Mr. Ichiya Hachinobu from Okubiniro - cho in Osaka.
