Exceptionally rare early Meiji Period zen temple votive placque dated C.1874. The frame is carved buddhist japanese cypress clouds in gold gilt lacquer with dragon heads intertwined at the top and bottom and the scaled body intertwined on the sides. The inside wood with the date C.1874 and donor was faded so Kodo Arts removed the wood and replaced it with a bevelled mirror. Absolutely stunning one of a kind museum piece mirror. Museum quality Edo Period C.1860 zen temple mizubachi. Lost wax cast with a great dragon spout in grand detail and spectacular shishi mythical lion ornament on the top of the lid. The diaper motif on the base is in raised relief and equally spectacular. The spigot on the dragon head is permanent so we are assuming that there was a constant water flow. Very slight indentation on one of the hanging jewels but so slight you can only see at the right angle. H:51cm x W: 43cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Important, rare bronze plated Meiji Period C.1885 'zeni-bako' money box that was kept before the shrine altar to accept offerings. Usually they are made of keyaki wood but this wood money box is covered in bronze with thick bronze nails. The front has a crest and two japanese characters in relief "HO" and "NO" meaning offerings from the heart. The back has a drawer at the bottom to remove the money. Impact, large bronze lantern from the 1950's. Thick bronze with hexagonal shape. One panel has the character 'hayashi' which means forest. One panel is a door that is hinged and opens. Museum piece bronze temple lantern dated Bunsei 13 ( Edo Period C. 1830). Inscription on the base reads: Bunsei 13, Year of the tiger, November, Auspicious Day. Gosho - machi ( Gosho village) Shoei-Ji (Shoei Temple). Shoei Temple is a Jodo -shu temple in Nara established in C.1100. It was rebuilt in C.1577. Exceptionally rare zen buddhist temple roof tile form the Meiji Period C.1890 of a Flaming Jewel or Hoju in Japanese. Would have been at one of the four corners of the temple or the at the end of the roof crest. The flaming jewel or sacred wishing gem is found everywhere in Buddhist iconology as a symbol of the void and purity. This tile is made of clay. Very good condition which is remarkable. Just superb Edo Period zen buddhist travelling altar or zushi. The rounded contoured roof and the outstanding metal work on the door and hinges indicate a high level samurai or retainer. Thick black lacquer and fine gilt on the inside. The roof dates the piece to late edo period c. 1860. The altar on the inside has 2 pillars and a cross beam with painted buddhist symbols. Also known as Uzumi or Okame, Otafuku is the name for the female half of a traditional Japanese Kyogen theatre pair She is considered to be the goddess of mirth and is frequently seen in Japanese art. Part of the Kyogen category of masks, this is a character used for the comic interlude in classic Noh plays. This mask carved in the late Meiji Period C.1910 is carved out of cypress and has some wear on the nose and stains but we think it just adds character. Her expression is sublime. H:46cm x W:40cm. The mother of all daruma wood carvings. On the back of this Edo Period c.1700 masterpiece is engraved 'Genroku 13' (c.1700) ,'Saigenshin Tsukuri' carved by Saigenshin, a famous zen monk of the time. Also 'Kyosagaju' meaning he was from a temple in the Saga District of Western Kyoto. The Carving is a magnificent flow of lines and expression. Definitely a museum quality piece.
