Having died in exile after being falsly accused, Sugawara Michizane (845-903) was deified by the emperor in 923 AD as the shinto god, Tenjin. Tenjin shrines were soon erected throught Japan. This antique Japanese Tenjin is from a Nara shinto shrine. Bits of wood are missing but this is natural due to age. The whole piece is stunning with great impact. The wood is Japanese cedar (sugi). Rare set of 4 Meiji Period c.1900 yukata kimono stencils from Ise. Each piece is 2 laminated sheets of mulberry paper treated with a persimmons tanin and aged for 2 years by smoking for strength. The stencil carver then makes his or her own tools to carve out the desired patterns which are then applied with rice resist for the desired dying. Antique Japanese black lacquered cypress wood altar with gold leaf inside. Metal fittings are of bronze. Inside is a fabulous Edo Period c.1850 standing wood sculpture of 'Juuichimen Kannon' the Eleven-Headed Kannon, god of mercy and compassion. This kannon has a crown of tiny bodhisattva heads with the head of the buddha at the top. A small standing image of Amida Buddha is in the front of the crown as well. This image has two arms; one with open palm, the other, in mudra of granting wishes. The face and hands are perfect with full patina. The feet and parts of the stand are missing due to age. A rare find for Kodo Arts, we are excited about this antique Japanese Edo Period c.1850 Buddhist temple lantern. The configuration is very unusual with the chrysanthemum middle section, the imperial royal family crest, sitting on a tripod legged base. Usually temple lantern come with a long stem. Oozing craftsmanship and vibe of a different age and standard, this antique Japanese Edo Period negoro lacquer sweets box is an example of authentic negoro lacquerware. Layers of vermillion red lacquer were polished until the black lacquer patches below came to the surface to give negoro lacquer its distinctive appearrance. The technique was the trademark of Negoro-ji Temple in Wakayama Prefecture, a zen buddhist temple. The six legs of the box are also lacquered with maroon lacquer and are attached with copper sheaths and three copper diamonds on each leg. Fantastic 6 panel byobu screen with cranes folicing about under plum and pine trees with a stream at their feet. Well executed cranes and trees with natural colors and beautiful brocade lining. Signed Maruyama Ohkyo which means this is a replica done in the early Meiji Period C.1880 as Maruyama Ohkyo was a very famous painter in the Edo Period C. 1614-1868. Comes in the original wood box. Exceptional early Showa Period c.1937 art deco bronze flower vase in the original signed paulownia box. The kanji on the box reads: Chudo Ume Moyo "bronze vase with plum petal motif.
