Fantastic sitting 'Jizo Bosatsu' Buddha holding the sacred wishing gem or 'Hoju' which symbolizes the eternal void. Lovely tranquil facial expression. Carving of the granite stone exceptional with the buddha sitting on a lotus petal stand and the lines of his robes in beautiful relief. Unbelievable, rare Edo Period C.1860 large shop sign 'kanban' for liver medicine. It was believed if a little boy cried too much his liver needed some help. Fantastic thick hinoki wood carving ornamentation with layers of black lacquer. Stout legs and finely detailed buddhist clouds in bronze around the frame. Great condition. Wonderful carved and lacquered wood Shishi -mai lion dance mask c.1950. Carved out of wood and lacquered, this mask was used at new year's festivals in Wakayama as part of the shishi lion dance to ward off evil spirits, pray for peace and petition the gods for bountiful harvest and health. Fabulous late Edo Period Keio 4 (C.1868)carved wood sculpture of Tenjin, the Shinto god of learning and inspiration for young men. Carvedby Shinkai Soukei, in feb. of 1868 the month his son was born, Taketaro Shinkai c.1868-1927. We think it was dedicated to his son's birth. Museum quality zen buddhist bronze temple gong with inscription and date 'Kansei 3' C.1791. Rare find and oldest gong we have ever had. Beautiful sound and in perfect condition. Inscripted on one side of gong is date, C.1791 and for whom it was donated for: Shibaya Rihachiro. Donors names are written. On the other side is a poem about nirvana. Relief work is superb throught the gong. The handle also sculpted in excellent reliefwith mythical dragon heads. About 13" diameter and 29" tall. Rare and exceptional dragon 'ramma' transom from the late Meiji Period c. 1900. Superb carving of a dragon in the celestial realm surrounded by buddhist clouds all carved in great detail and flow. When a carp swims up a waterfall and makes it over the top, it turns into a dragon that roams the celestial realm as the protector of the Buddha's teachings. 3D claws and eyebrows as well as the head which stands out in relief from the body. The buddhist swirl above the head finishes off a masterpiece that belongs in a museum. 28" tall x 68" long. Condition excellent. Shipping from California warehouse.
