Superb Shishi lion wood festival mask for the lion dance at the New Years festival in the Showa Period C.1930. The Japanese lion consists of a wooden, lacquered head called a “shishi-gashira”, literally, a lion’s head, and a characteristic body of red dyed cloth with white designs. It can be manipulated by a single person, or two people, one of whom manipulates the head. As with Chinese lions, the make of the head and designs on the body will differ from region to region, and even from school to school. The Shi-Shi-Mai, the Lion dance, is known to have the power to ward off evil spirits and summon the god of harvest and wealth, bringing prosperity. The tradition has been passed for generations everywhere in Japan. It is performed at many Shinto festivals. This mask has a mouth that opens and closes and hair on the forehead. Carved out of wood and lacquered. H:13" x W:12" . Attached cotton body is very long. Ask for shipping quote.

Fabulous pair of mother-of--pearl inlay red lacquered Late Meiji Period C.1910 peddler sweets boxes. Rope would have gone through the bases and the peddler would have carried the two boxes on a pole from village to village or through towns. Inside would have been stacking boxes to hold the sweets, usually omanjyu red bean paste sweets. Block Kanji design on sides and characters describing the shop the sweets were made from. Later it seems the the sweets shop changed hands in the Taisho Period and a paper was added with a more modern telephone #. On the inside base is written name Echigo so we know it was from that region. Slight lacquer wear but very good condition. Spectacular end tables. Ask for shipping quote from California warehouse.
