Signed on the bottom, KANINKOSO, this bronze 'koro' incense burner is from the Showa Period 1950-1960. The main body has a flock of cranes in supurb relief, as well as a lid with a hexagonal turtle diaper and a turtle on top.

Exceedingly rare Meiji Period c.1885 zen buddhist temple altar stands used for offerings. Japanese cypress wood carved and lacquered with layers of gold lacquer. The japanese characters on one side of each stand read: "Mitanisan Myohodoju" meaning belongs to Mitanisan Myohodo Temple and on the other "Seshu Tomachi - Saitotatsuji" the donator is Mr. Saitotatsuji of the town of Tomachi. Regal altar temple table from a zen buddhist temple in the Kyoto area. The top is Japanese 'keyaki' (zelkova) or elm. The carvings in relief are superior. Lotus flowers and leaves. Wonderfully carved antique Japanese noh mask, signed on the back, "KOKUTSURU". This mask is the character 'koomote' the main actor in the noh plays, 'Kocho' and 'Funa-Benkei'. Carved out of hinoki or Japanese cypress wood and with many layers of 'gofun', a crushed oyster pigment. The expression is very expressive and the condition is excellent. c.1920. Excellent depiction of Ebisu, one of the seven lucky gods of Japan in bronze. Early Showa Period, C.1930, the detail and expression is fabulous. Written on his back is "Shin Chiku Oiwai" meaning this bronze sculpture was commissioned as a new house celebration gift. The names of the presenters are also written. Ebisu is holding a fish in one had and a bamboo fishing pole in the other. He is the patron of fisherman as well as the Shinto god of businessman. Shrines to him abound all over Japan. Very rare Taisho Period, C.1910 bronze carp garden water spout. The detail on the bronze fish scales and the waves about the tail are exceptional. Very lovely black lacquered 'suzuri bako' writing box with mother of pearl inlaid leaves and swirling gold gilt vines on the cover. Inside is a silver ink pourer and ink stone and brush. One of the finest and biggest zen buddhist 'zushi' travelling altars we have ever seen. C. 1860 late Edo Period. Most likely the owner was a high ranking samurai. The altar stands 69cm tall and 47cm wide. The metal fittings are copper and exceptional. Inside is a gold gilt inner chamber. The condition is very good. Ask for shipping quote.
