Mitsuo Kano (1903-1970) was a very great First Class Japanese Potter. His famous works sold for high prices at auction houses such as Christie's both before and after his passing. He won the Blue-Ribbon Award of one of the most famous Japanese Art Exhibitions, Nitten Exhibition in 1949. Known for his exquisite glazes, this vase is no exception. Oblong in shape and very dynamic. And very large at 41cm tall by 44cm wide. Kano Mitsuo studied under Komori Shinobu (1889-1962) and at the Kyoto City Pottery Research School. His work is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He won the Ministry of Education Grand Prize in 1998. Very sweet hearth pot stabilizing zelkova fish and iron hook on a bamboo pole with iron circle and fittings. A pot was held above the open hearth fire in old japanese minka farmhouses. The fish could be adjusted to adjust the pot. Years of fire smoke have created a patina on the fish and bamboo. The bamboo has iron bands on it and a few minor cracks. The fish is in great condition. Important late Meiji Period C.1900 Shigaraki tsubo or tea leaf jar. Shigaraki being of course one of the 7 great pottery centers of feudal Japan. Rare and serene stone guardian diety made of granite from the Edo Period C.1850. Stands on a stone base made with lotus leafs in relief. The Lotus being one of the main symbols of purity. The granite has lichen and a rich patina from being outside over the years. On the back kanji japanese characters are carved in but difficult to read. H:80cm x W:33cm. Breathtaking Suehiro Koyama Bizen vase fired in a natural wood fired kiln. The organic patterns from the firing have created a majestic texture and art deco form. Suehiro was born in 1948 and studied for five years under Kaneshige Sozan before establishing his own kiln in 1971. This piece dates from those early years. In 1982 he established an Anagama at his current location in Bizen. He has won first place at the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition, as well as the Governors prize and others. His works have also been accepted at the National Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, National Ceramics Exhibition, and one of his pieces was selected as a gift for the Imperial family.
