Brilliant folk art piece. A clay 'Fushimi Ningyo' sumo doll from the 1930s. Fushimi Ningyo dolls were sought after souvenirs by visitors to Kyoto. Fushimi Inari being one of the must see great shrines of southern Kyoto. The detail of the arms and fabulous facial expression make this a collector's piece. Exceptional Edo Period C.1860 black lacquered wood stand with lotus petals and buddhist clouds carved around the entire circumference. The carving is outdone only by the superb lacquer work. Spectacular and very rare 'koi' carp swimming up a waterfall temple roof gable tile. The fact that it is intact and not broken is amazing. Carp swimming up a waterfall is the symbol of courage in Japan and when they make it to the top they turn in celestial guardian dragons protecting the buddha's teachings. Fantastic. Wonderful Meiji Period C.1909 painting of a white egret standing on bamboo by the acclaimed master Hishida Shunso (1874-1911). One of Okakura Tenshin's puils, he played a major role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga. His real name was Hishida Miyoji and he was also know for his numerous paintings of cats. He was commissioned by the Tokyo National Museum and in 1898 he joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin. In 1903-1905 he traveled extensively overseas holding exhibitions in The United States and Europe. He was awarded the Order Of Culture. Excellent condition. Looks to have been remounted. Wonderful carving of 'Tenjin' the Shinto god of learning. In ancient times he was unjustly exiled and became a hero in Japanese folklore. Is revered as the god of learning and many Shinto shrines all over Japan are dedicated to him. This piece is from the Taisho Period c. 1915. Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. Esoteric Dainichi Nyorai buddha that stands for Vairochana - whom represents the cosmic life that surrounds us like the air we breathe. The proper name is Mahavairochana. His elaborately arranged hair is surmounted by a crown, and he wears jeweled ornaments. The remnants of which we can see on this buddha. He holds the wisdom mudra with the five fingers of the right hand wrapped around the left index finger. The buddha is from the end of the Edo Period C. 1860. Very wabi sabi Taisho Period C.1920 iron tea ceremony tetsubin kettle used for making the green tea water. It is believed boiling water in these kettles confers on the participants long life. The kettle has characters in relief of a poem celebrating the mystical Horai Mountain in ancient China where the sages lived. It has the seal of Eirin, the foundry where it was made. Exceptional zen buddhist bronze temple bell with Negoro red lacquer wood stand, cushion and striker. The stiker is wood and the handle is black lacquered. The cushion is silk over cotton. The Negoro stand is older thanthe bell most likey late Meijiperiod, c.1900. The bell is c.1930 and has the japanese characters inscripeted on the bell: 'Tokusi Kinhori' or specially hand made pounded bronze. the sound resonates and seem to go on forever.
