Very rare and unusual Edo Period C.1960 fire brigade banner used to declare which fire brigade had rushed to the fire and heroically put it out first. Wonderful carving of 'Tenjin' the Shinto god of learning. In ancient times he was unjustly exiled and became a hero in Japanese folklore. Is revered as the god of learning and many Shinto shrines all over Japan are dedicated to him. This piece is from the Taisho Period c. 1915. Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. The condition of Kobo Daishi is good with a bit of wear behind his head. See pictures. H:about 24cm; W: about 28cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. Esoteric Dainichi Nyorai buddha that stands for Vairochana - whom represents the cosmic life that surrounds us like the air we breathe. The proper name is Mahavairochana. His elaborately arranged hair is surmounted by a crown, and he wears jeweled ornaments. The remnants of which we can see on this buddha. He holds the wisdom mudra with the five fingers of the right hand wrapped around the left index finger. The buddha is from the end of the Edo Period C. 1860. Very wabi sabi Taisho Period C.1920 iron tea ceremony tetsubin kettle used for making the green tea water. It is believed boiling water in these kettles confers on the participants long life. The kettle has characters in relief of a poem celebrating the mystical Horai Mountain in ancient China where the sages lived. It has the seal of Eirin, the foundry where it was made. Excellent condition, no leaks or cracks. Slight chip on the spout mouth or a firing scar, not sure which. Bronze lid with copper top. Ask for shipping quote. 26cm high ; 17cm wide.

Exceptional zen buddhist bronze temple bell with Negoro red lacquer wood stand, cushion and striker. The stiker is wood and the handle is black lacquered. The cushion is silk over cotton. The Negoro stand is older thanthe bell most likey late Meijiperiod, c.1900. The bell is c.1930 and has the japanese characters inscripeted on the bell: 'Tokusi Kinhori' or specially hand made pounded bronze. the sound resonates and seem to go on forever. The essence of Oribe pottery can be seen in this late Edo Period C.1860 brazier used for heating the old houses. The brown feldspar markings along with the trademark Oribe olive green glazes on a white hagi base truly epitomize a perfect pottery piece. A kiln scars which occured in the firing (or maybe they are chips) on the rim (see pictures) but they are so old they definitely are 'aji' or character. A museum piece. Simple elegance envelops this wonderful late Meiji Period C.1910 bronze 'koro' crane incense burner. The piece has two parts; the top consisting of the crane's feathers and head, and the bottom which contains the ash. On the underside of the bottom in relief are the crane's legs tucked under. Exceedingly rare Meiji Period c.1885 zen buddhist temple altar stands used for offerings. Japanese cypress wood carved and lacquered with layers of gold lacquer. The japanese characters on one side of each stand read: "Mitanisan Myohodoju" meaning belongs to Mitanisan Myohodo Temple and on the other "Seshu Tomachi - Saitotatsuji" the donator is Mr. Saitotatsuji of the town of Tomachi.
