Deep, rich Meiji Period (c.1867-1912) bronze with carp swimming over waves in raised relief on one side; geese frolicing among grasses, also in raised relief on the other side. Exceptionally bold, Meiji period, large bronze antique Japanese vase with copper liner. On the vase are paulownia leaves in raised relief. Along with chrysanthemums, the paulownia leaf has been a symbol of the Imperial family for centuries. Hideyoshi, the second shogun of Japan, took it as his family crest. Legend holds that the paulownia is the only tree on which the mythical phoenix alights. Condition excellent with an unnoticable slight indent on one side. c.1895. (14" x 10") (34cm x 25cm). The most sensational antique Japanese bronze tea ceremony 'suiban' flower vessel we have seen here at Kodo Arts. Meiji Period c.1890 thick red bronze with especially spectacular bronze work on the corners. Legs are knarled roots and intertwined knot motif decorates all four corners in raised relief. This antique Japanese turn of the century lovely bronze incense burner is a beautiful example of the Japanese lost-wax casting technique favored at the end of the Meiji Period, c.1900. The lid has a mythical shishi on the top and the base is on tripod legs with repeating diaper design and figures in raised relief. Two arms extend to the sides and these are plum branches. Just lovely antique Japanese Taisho Period c.1925 bronze flower vase with cranes under a moon in superb raised relief. Hotsuma Katori was born Meiji Period c.1874 and died in 1954. He was a graduate of the prestigious Tokyo Art School in 1891 winning honors as the top student and artist. He won the silver prize In the 1900 Paris World Expo. His works are in the Kyoto National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum. His son, also a bronze craftsman, is a National Treasure. Comes with wood stand. Perfect condition. c.1925. This antique Japanese Edo Period c.1840 red bronze utsubata flower vase is actually a Japanese proverb, "Hyotan Kara Koma". Literally, 'a horse from a gourd' meaning "the unexpected can be wonderful". The base of the vase is a wisteria wrapped gourd with an old man climbing on it. It was made so his head can move. On the underside of the top vase is a horse in raised thick bronze. Gourds are regarded as a lucky charm in Japan. Beautiful patina. c.1840. (10" x 11") (26cm x 28cm). Unusual japanese bronze flower vase, signed with the original kiri (paulownia wood) tomobako box. On the lid of the box is the kanji 'Sentoku Tsubogata Hanaire' meaning the design is like a japanese tsubo or tea storage jar and smoked straw was used at the end of firing to achieve the rich colored markings and patina. The vase is a 'hanaire' meaning a flower vase.
