Exceptional bronze craftsmanship from one of Japan's premier post war bronze masters, Sawada Seiko. Born in 1894, Sawada was awarded numerous Art prizes and was asked to judge most of the important, prestigeous art competitions. This fabulous bronze vase c. 1950 has wave diaper motif around the neck with swallows in raised relief. The handles are mythical buddhist elephants. Slight bronze discoloration from age. Unusual japanese bronze flower vase, signed with the original kiri (paulownia wood) tomobako box. On the lid of the box is the kanji 'Sentoku Tsubogata Hanaire' meaning the design is like a japanese tsubo or tea storage jar and smoked straw was used at the end of firing to achieve the rich colored markings and patina. The vase is a 'hanaire' meaning a flower vase. Thick antique Japanese 'aka' or red bronze which dates this piece to late Edo Period when red bronze was predominant. Wonderful raised gourd handle attachments anchor the bronze handle. Gourds were considered lucky charms in traditional Japan. The bronze lid is a dragon floating in buddhist clouds.
